HAYDEN (1-0) at SILVER LAKE (1-0)

Hayden is coming off of a 21-7 season-opening win over two-time defending Class 1A state champion Olpe, ending the Eagles' 26-game winning streak, while Logan Pegram made his debut as Silver Lake's coach with a 28-21 road win over Riley County. Hayden got pass interceptions from seniors JC Cummings and Dylan Foster while Cummings and senior Ethan Florence ran for touchdowns and sophomore quarterback Jett Wahlmeier hit sophomore Jensen Schrickel for a TD pass. Junior quarterback Tanner Martin accumulated more than 250 total yards and had a hand in all four Silver Lake touchdowns in the Eagles' season-opening win.

LANSING (0-1, 0-1) at SHAWNEE HEIGHTS (0-1, 0-1)

Shawnee Heights fell 31-20 to new United Kansas Conference member Piper in its season opener on the road, while Lansing dropped a 27-21 UKC decision to De Soto. Piper built a 24-0 advantage over Heights before surviving a late T-Bird rally. Heights junior Allen Baughman rushed for 92 yards on 17 carries while senior Nick Freeland completed six of 11 passes for 45 yards and junior Jayden Moore caught five passes for 65 yards. Defensively, junior Alex Dittman was in on eight tackles and senior Jaye Jones was credited with seven stops.

LEAVENWORTH (1-0, 1-0) at TOPEKA WEST (0-1, 0-1)

Topeka West will be looking to bounce back from last Thursday's 58-14 United Kansas Conference loss to Seaman while Leavenworth is coming off a 61-0 UKC win over Kansas City-Turner. West senior quarterback Malachi Berg went 17 of 29 passing for 244 yards and two touchdowns while senior Xavier Alexander carried the ball 17 times for 102 yards and senior Kamen Jones caught five passes for 114 yards and a touchdown.

SEAMAN (1-0, 1-0) at KANSAS CITY-TURNER (0-1, 0-1)

Seaman opened its first United Kansas Conference season with a 58-14 road win over Topeka West while Turner dropped a 61-0 UKC decision to Leavenworth in the Bears' season opener. Seaman accumulated 455 offensive yards, including 376 on the ground. Senior Bryson Vawter rushed for 94 yards and two TDs on 13 attempts while junior Jack Bloom rushed for 85 yards and a TD on seven carries and senior Jaxson Thomas had 75 yards and a TD on six carries.

TOPEKA HIGH (0-1) at MANHATTAN (1-0)

Topeka High faces another tough test Friday night at Centennial League rival Manhattan after dropping a 78-7 to last year's Class 5A runnerup to Maize last Saturday. Manhattan is coming off a 26-23 overtime win over perennial Class 6A contender Derby last Friday. Topeka High senior quarterback Peyton Wheat had some passing success against Maize, but the Trojans will need to take a big step defensively to stay in the hunt against Manhattan.

WASHBURN RURAL (1-0) at DE SOTO (1-0)

Washburn Rural opened its season with a hard-earned 49-42 non-league win at Wichita East last Friday while United Kansas Conference member De Soto took a 27-21 league win over Lansing. Washburn Rural trailed on four diffferent occasions, including 42-33 late in the contest, but the Junior Blues scored the final 16 points to pull out the victory. Junior quarterback Branton DeWeese was 26 of 38 passing for 302 yards and four touchdowns while senior Amr Sabarrini had six catches for 97 yards and senior Ma'kenttis Adams had six catches for 92 yards and three TDs. Defensively, senior Ty Weber was in on 11 tackles, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and recorded two sacks.

CAIR PARAVEL LATIN (0-1) at DONIPHAN WEST (0-1)

Cair Paravel Latin, playing its first football game as a full KSHSAA member, gave defending Eight-Man-II state champ a battle for more than a half before Axtell pulled away late. Cair Paravel put itself in position for a big upset, leading 26-22 at halftime, before Axtell outscored the Lions 60-12 in the second half, including a 38-6 advantage in the fourth quarter. CPLS junior quarterback Evan Will passed for 141 yards and four touchdowns on a 13 of 24 performance while sophomore Jase Pavlik went 10 of 18 passing for 108 yards and two TDs. Lion junior Simon Everhart caught nine passes for 91 yards and two TDs and scored three times overall while junior Jesiah Bonura caught five passes for 54 yard and a pair of touchdowns. Doniphan West is coming off of a 46-0 loss to Washington County.

ROSSVILLE (0-1) at RILEY COUNTY (0-1)

Class 1A stalward St. Marys never trailed en route to ending Rossville's 26-game winning streak with a 20-13 home Mid-East League victory while Riley County dropped a 28-21 Mid-East League decision to Silver Lake. The Bears took a 6-0 lead over Rossville in the first quarter and led 14-7 at the half before the two teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter to account for the final margin. Rossville junior Camden Horak completed 12 of 25 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown while senior Kade Perine rushed for 40 yard and a TD and caught five passes for 116 yards.

HIGHLAND PARK (1-0, 1-0) at KANSAS CITY-SCHLAGLE (1-0, 1-0)

Highland Park won for the first time since 2014, snapping a 65-game losing streak with a 60-47 Meadowlark Conference decision over Kansas City-Wyandotte last Friday night. Kansas City-Schlagle also posted a Meadowland Conference win in its opener, blanking Kansas City-Harmon, 55-0. Highland Park senior star Tre Richardson accumulated more than 400 all-purpose yards and had a hand in six touchdowns in the Scots' victory.
