  • Remembering five local sports greats we lost in 2025

As we wade into the first full week of a new year, it's natural to get excited about the future.

But while we look ahead to 2026, it’s also important that we don't forget those we lost in 2025.

In '25 we said goodbye to Bob Uecker (baseball). George Foreman (boxing), D. Wayne Lukas (horse racing), Dave Parker (baseball), Ryne Sandberg (baseball), Davey Johnson (baseball), Ken Dryden (hockey), Bob Trumpy (football), Lenny Wilkens (basketball), Fuzzy Zoeller (golf) and Greg Biffle (auto racing), but the losses were also felt close to home.

Longtime local radio broadaster and TopSports.news founder Bill Griffin passed away at the age of 69 just 20 days into 2025 while WIBW, Kansas state and University of Nebraska broadcaster Greg Sharpe passed away on Feb. 14 at the age of 61.

The year was also marked by the passing of Hayden Hall of Famer Rick Strecker on June 28 at 67 years old, Washburn University basketball Hall of Famer Ryan Murphy on July 9 at 45 years old and Hayden Hall of Famer Tom Stringer on Nov. 28 at the age of 64 .

Here’s a brief look at the legacy the five Topeka sports figures left:

    BILL GRIFFIN

TopSports.news founder and longtime local radio broadcaster Bill Griffin passed away on Jan. 20, 2025 at the age of 69 after a 10-month battle with esophageal cancer.

Griffin grew up in the greater Kansas City area and played baseball and football at the University of Kansas before carving out a long multi-faceted business career in Topeka, including a stint as the general manager of the Heartland Park Topeka racing facility.

It was Griffin's brainchild in 2020 to launch TopSports.news, a website dedicated to Shawnee County high school and Washburn University sports, and he was the heart and soul of the organization from its debut on Jan. 1, 2021.

Griffin also put together a 30-year career broadcasting high school sports with Hall of Famer Mike Manns, with Griffin continuing to broadcast games during his cancer fight, working his final high school basketball doubleheader six days prior to his death.

Manns said his longtime broadcast partner was a perfectionist in everything he did.

"Even if he made a little mistake he just knocked himself out, feeling bad about making a mistake and making sure he never ever made that mistake again,'' Manns said. "He told me one time, 'This is something I really enjoy, I love doing games and I wouldn't want to be doing anything else with my life right now than doing games.' ''

    GREG SHARPE

Former WIBW and Kansas State broadcaster and 17-year voice of the Nebraska Cornhuskers Greg Sharpe passed away on Feb. 14 at the age of 61 after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Sharpe graduated from Stanley-Blue Valley High School in 1982 before earning a broadcast journalism degree at Kansas State.

Following graduation from K-State, Sharpe worked in both radio and television for WIBW in the sports department. Sharpe was hired as the voice of Kansas State in 1996 and called games for his alma mater until 2002. He then served as program director and hosted Sports Sanity for WIBW radio until he was hired as the voice of the University of Nebraska in 2007.

Sharpe was named sportscaster of the year twice in both Kansas and Nebraska and was inducted into the Kansas Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2024.

    RICK STRECKER

Rick Strecker, a member of Hayden Catholic High School's first class of inductees into the school's Hall of Fame in 2021, passed away on June 28 at the age of 67 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

A 1976 Hayden graduate, Strecker served his alma mater as a physics and chemistry teacher, state championship coach, athletic director, principal and the school's president for nearly two decades before moving on to Blue Valley West in 2016.

Strecker, the student council president and athlete of the year as a senior at Hayden, led the Wildcats to three Class 4A  state championships in girls basketball and two in track during his coaching career at the school.

Strecker continued to teach and coach in multiple sports at Blue Valley West, including serving as the Jaguars' head girls basketball coach, until being forced to step away after receiving his cancer diagnosis early in 2025.

  • Emmot's late free throws push Shawnee Heights girls past Hayden, 38-36

It took three periods, but Shawnee Heights and Hayden finally shook off the rust accumulated over the holiday break, turning a snoozer into a thriller that the T-Birds won in the final seconds, 38-36, at Shawnee Heights Friday.

Just one day after New Years, the Wildcats and T-Birds came out looking like they needed more practice, or more sleep. They struggled to a 20-20 tie after three quarters. But then the offenses got in gear. Hayden led 31-26 with 2:25 remaining. But then the T-Birds went on a 10-2 run to lead 36-33 with just seconds remaining.

Hayden sophomore Hailey Schmidtlein, frustrated into an inefficient shooting night, let fly a 3-pointer from about 25 feet that tied the game with 6.2 seconds remaining.

Shawnee Heights junior KK Emmot was not intimidated by the moment, however, but rather seized command of the game. Knowing the T-Birds were in the bonus, she took the inbounds pass and drove the length of the floor, drawing a foul with 2.9 seconds on the clock. Emmot calmly stepped to the line and sank both free throws, as she had twice earlier in the period. She scored nine of her 18 points in the final quarter to lead the T-Birds to their fourth victory of the season.

“Lucky enough for us, we hit some shots coming down the stretch,” Shawnee Heights coach Bob Wells said. “Then (Schmidtlein) hit a big shot coming down the stretch when she hadn’t (shot well) from the perimeter all game. Kudos to her for stepping up and hitting that.”

Wells drew up a play to give Emmot a chance to decide the game.

“I thought we did a good job getting the ball where we wanted to get the ball, finding a way to get it into KK’s hands. She was definitely the first option,” Wells said. “She was just gonna take it and go do what she does.”

Emmot hit six of six free throws down the stretch and accounted for seven of the T-Birds’ final eight points. She said pressure does not bother her.

“I work good with pressure and stress. I don’t really care,” Emmot said. “I just know that if I start hustling, everyone else (takes) their energy from me. In the fourth quarter we just had to get going. I was screaming at everyone, ‘We have to get hyped!’ And then we just started hitting shots.”

“She works her tail off. I’m super proud of her,” Wells said of Emmot. “And all the girls, at some point in time, stepped up and hit shots, and that’s what we needed to happen. We just need to get where everybody is rolling at the same time. This is a fun group to watch.”

Hayden, ranked second in Class 4A in the most recent poll by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, struggled to get its offense in gear. Schmidtlein hit just 4-19 attempts from the field and finished with 16. Lauren Borjon added 11.

Wells said playing a game so early in January, with so little time to practice, contributed to the ragged performance by both teams.

“When you have four days to practice, where you’re trying to get your legs back and get your shot back, you can’t have both,” Wells said. “I think you saw that from both teams.”

“I think there’s some sickness going around,” Emmot added. “And you could tell (Hayden) was not in super great shape either. I think both of us were just playing with the same amount of hustle and everything. It was just no one could score. We were both pretty gassed.”

  • Shawnee Heights boys crank up offense in 79-60 romp past Hayden

Shawnee Heights' boys came out of the holiday break hitting on all cylinders, knocking off Hayden 79-60 at Shawnee Heights Friday.

A game between two teams looking to improve their fortunes in the new year went the way of the T-Birds, who got 30 first-half points from the high-scoring tandem of junior Cam Ross and senior Ja’Veon Alston. The T-Birds jumped out to a 19-5 lead in the first four minutes. By halftime, Shawnee Heights had an 18-point lead, which it stretched to 23 points early in the third period.

“I feel like we came out pretty strong,” Ross said. “We were coming out after a loss (to Topeka West) and I feel like we played a little harder, rebounded a little more. We’re not a very tall team, so we’ve got to get to the rebound more and be team players instead of individuals. When everybody’s contributing, the team just plays well.”

Shawnee Heights got 28 points from Ross and 19 from Alston. JaiMarion Cook and Aiden Scott each contributed nine points, and Quincey Dixon added seven. The T-Birds hit 27-53 field goals and 15-19 free throws. But they scuffled enough in the second half to give coach Ken Darting plenty to work on.

“Anytime you talk about negatives, there’s a thousand positives,” Darting said. “As a coach, what I see is what needs fixin’. So, no matter what happens, I’m not totally happy. But all I’m saying is, if we don’t get it fixed, we won’t be as good as we can be.”

The T-Birds evened their record at 3-3. Each of the three losses – to Piper, Manhattan and Topeka West – was by a margin of five points or fewer.

“We’re doing things hard enough and good enough that we’ve gotta stop ‘almost’ beating (our opponents),” Darting said. “We’ve got to beat them. We’ve got ourselves in position (to win against good teams) and that’s quite an accomplishment. So, we’ve got a bunch of kids playing their rears off, but our margin of error is a lot smaller than a (Topeka) West or a Piper or a Seaman.”

Hayden dropped to 3-5 on the season. The Wildcats were led by Connor Hanika with 20 points, Mason Becker with 17 and Carter Compton with 11.

Shawnee County girls high school sports teams may likely remember 2025 as the year of near-misses, with seven county teams finishing second in five different sports while eight individuals/relays posted runnerup finishes.

But the county still had notable accomplishments to celebrate, with local schools capturing a pair of state team championships while local athletes captured four individual state titles.

Class 6A soccer champion Washburn Rural and 3A volleyball champ Silver Lake share the No. 1 spot on the TopSports.news Top 10 list for 2025 while Seaman track star Ryin Miller, who dominated the 5A state track meet with three wins and Highland Park wrestler Makayla Cadet, who captured her school's first girls state crown, hold down the next two spots.

Seaman posted runnerup team finishes in basketball and tennis while Silver Lake finished second in basketball and softball, Hayden was second in soccer and volleyball and Washburn Rural posted a runnerup finish in softball.

Individually, Washburn Rural's Molly Spader, Seaman's Koti Best and Taylie Heston and Shawnee Heights' Isabel Reyes all recorded second-place finishes in state wrestling while Rural's Morgan Ray and Topeka High's Ahsieyrhuajh Rayton were individual runnerups in state track, Seaman's Emma Sweeney was a singles runnerup in state tennis and Washburn Washburn Rural's 4x800-meter relay team also posted a second-place state finish in track.

"After our first game (at Pittsburg Colgan last week) I know I wished that we had more practices, but we had to play two more,'' Reynoldson said. "We kind of worked things out during those games and I think I like (the busy stretch). You learn a lot about your team.''

Reynoldson thought his Wildcat took another step forward in Tuesday's win.

"What we always talk about is that energy and effort are the things you can control all the time and I thought our energy and effort were great, so I'm satisfied,'' Reynoldson said.

"I think we've taken some steps with moving the ball on offense and getting ourselves some pretty good looks.''

Hayden, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, went wire to wire Tuesday against the Bobcats, scoring the opening five points of the game and opening up a commanding 22-9 advantage by the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats went on to take a 33-16 cushion to the locker room at halftime and put the game out of reach with a 16-9 third quarter before both teams scored 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore standouts Hailey Schmidtlein and Blakely Walter combined for 38 points to power Hayden, with Schmidtlein scoring a game-high 22 points with three 3-pointers while Walter added 16 points with a pair of 3s.

EMPORIA -- There were a lot of positives for Hayden's boys basketball team in Tuesday's opening round game in the Paul Terry Classic, with the Wildcats building a 17-point lead over Basehor-Linwood late in the first half and leading by seven points with just a minute remaining.

But the way the game ended left a sour taste in Hayden's mouth, with the Bobcats storming back to take a 63-62 win over the Wildcats on a pair of free throws with 4.1 seconds remaining.

Hayden junior Mason Becker raced downcourt to get up a potential game-winning shot, but his attempt bounced off the rim as time ran out, dropping the Wildcats to 2-2 on the season.

Hayden didn't get its entire team together until just days before its first game due to the Wildcats' run to the Class 3A state football championship game, leaving Dwayne Anthony's team with precious little practice time.

But Anthony refused to use that as an excuse for Hayden's late-game problems Tuesday.

"I don't think we can blame that on practice time,'' Anthony said. "I think we've got to blame that on abandoning the things that got us to those leads.''

But Anthony was quick to say that the Wildcats will use Tuesday loss as a learning experience and will move on.

"I like my guys, and if that's the challenge that we have is not being hard-headed and sticking the course, then we'll be just fine,'' Anthony said. "We're going to learn, because this hurts.''

Hayden took a 32-15 lead with 1:33 left in the first half on a three-point play from junior Carter Compton, but the Bobcats (1-1) scored the final six points of the half to gain some momentum.

Basehor-Linwood, which got a huge 28-point night from junior Elliott Brown, continued to rally in the third quarter, getting as close as a point and trailing 43-40 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Hayden held off the Bobcats through most of the final stanza and led 60-53 with a minute left before Basehor-Linwood ended the game with a 10-2 run, getting the game-winning charities from senior Chase Young.

Senior Connor Hanika and Compton scored 17 points apiece to lead Hayden while Becker added 11 points.

6 p.m. Friday at Hutchinson Community College

Hayden, the No. 1 Class 3A East seed, advanced to its third straight state championship game with a 46-0 home semifinal rout over No. 2 East seed Santa Fe Trail last Friday while No. 1 West seed Andale rolled to a 41-7 win over No. 2 seed Rock Creek.

The semifinal romps set up a second straight title game showdown between the two 12-0 state powers.

Hayden's closest game of the season was a 43-29 state quarterfinal win over Jefferson West while Andale's closest game of the year was last week's 34-point win over Rock Creek.

Andale scored a season-high 104 points in its season opener against El Dorado and the Indians have posted four shutouts while Hayden scored a season-high 70 points in a 70-7 playoff win over Columbus and has recorded five shutouts and limited opponents to seven or fewer points in 10 games.

At 6 p.m. on Friday in Hutchinson, the Wildcat upperclassmen will be out to add an exclamation point to that success with the school's fourth state championship after back-to-back runnerup finishes.

After dropping a 34-7 decision to Cheney in awful conditions in the 2023 title game, Hayden dropped a 36-19 decision to Andale a year ago before running off 12 straight wins this fall to earn a rematch with the Indians, also 12-0.

"A lot of these guys, they saw action as a sophomore and that's invaluable I think when you look at the grand scheme of things,'' said Hayden coach Bill Arnold, who has led the Wildcats to a state crown in 2008 and five runnerup finishes. "State championships are a little bit different and they've kept themselves focused and they haven't been afraid to climb the mountain again.

"It's not easy losing two in a row, but nobody has even talked about losing it. We just knew that our goal was to get back there and win a state championship.''

And although Arnold knows the Wildcats face another tough test against an Andale team that has won five of six state titles since 2019, the Hayden coach also knows he'll get a maximum effort from his team.

"A hundred percent,'' Arnold said. "They get it. From the senior standpoint, leadership-wise they've been right on cue all year long and, honestly, starting all the way back in January. They know what the expectations are and they've been good leaders on and off the field.

"They've got a great program down there (in Andale) and I think we've got a good program, too. I am more concerned about us than I am about Andale in terms of just our assignments and the technique involved in our assignments. And if we do all those things correctly, at the end of the day, win, lose or draw, you can live with yourself.''

Hayden's put itself in position to win the 2024 title when the Wildcats took a 19-12 lead to the locker room at halftime.

But Andale took control in the second half en route to the 17-point win.

"We lost a little bit of momentum right before half because we didn't get in the end zone,'' Arnold said. "Then we had a ridiculous penalty that allowed them to make us start inside our 20 and the playbook gets a little smaller down there. We had to punt and they came out and scored.

"We turned the ball over immediately and I think through part of that, was we did get tired. They were rotating a few more guys on that line than what we could, but part of that's also your mentality state. When things are going good you've got your adrenalin and your momentum going through, but when we had a couple of mishaps there right off the bat coming out of halftime, the ship was sailing the wrong direction.''

  • Hayden girls basketball will look different, embracing new challenge

    By VINCE LOVERGINE

    TopSports.news

Dating back to 2023, Hayden has made it to the state tournament three straight seasons.

The Wildcats got knocked out in the first round in 2023. In 2024, Hayden finished 21-5 and posted a third-place finish. Last year, Hayden finished third again with a 22-3 record.

Coach Carvel Reynoldson enters year number seven with Hayden and said the year before he arrived took over, the Wildcats only won six games.

CarvelReynoldson2025 1Despite suffering heavy graduation losses from last season's third-place state finishing team, Hayden coach Carvel Reynoldson has high hopes for his Wildcats this winter. [File photo/TSN]

There were many ups and downs at that time and Reynoldson feels like winning the Centennial League last year proves the Wildcats have turned the corner. With the team losing Millie Ramsey, Brylee Meier and Norma Greco, Reynoldson's heard that people believe Hayden will take a step back, but he doesn’t think so.

“The heart and tenacity the girls are showing me are giving me hope,” Reynoldson said. “We have a senior class that has played all four years and knows the standards and they enforce them. A lot of times, I don’t have to because they do.

"They’re an athletic group, we’re a lot faster than we were last year, we’re tenacious, but replacing what we lost is going to be difficult from a scoring standpoint. Everybody knows that, but I love the tenacity we play with.”

Something else that sticks out is that the experience the girls have gained being at the state tournament the last couple of years, but also watching the seniors before them hold the team accountable.

A couple of players Reynoldson will rely on heavily will be senior Kaydence Watts and sophomore Hailey Schmidtlien, who was a first-team All-Shawnee County and All-Centennial League pick as a freshman while being named the county and league newcomer of the yer.

Schmidtlien said one thing you’ll see from this group is the heart they’ll show, even though for some of her teammates, basketball may not be their number one sport.

“I think it’s been so much fun so far, I think these girls have learned a lot and you can tell. Our scrimmage day one looks nothing like it does now,” Schmidtlien said.

  • Hayden boys basketball pushing for deeper run as new season begins

    By VINCE LOVERGINE

    TopSports.news

From the first day of practice after Dwayne Anthony was hired as Hayden's boys basketball coach prior to last season, the enthusiasm and attention to detail was stressed immediately.

In year two, that’s no different. The intensity is higher and giving less than 100 percent is not acceptable.

DwayneAnthony2025TH 2Dwayne Anthony won't have his complete Hayden team together until after next Friday's state championship football game, but he has high hopes for the 2025-2026 campaign. [File photo/TSN]

“I live by a thing called push -- praying for some good success to happen,'' Anthony said. "That’s my own personal message but I try to live out that every day. We just need to show up as the best version of ourselves.

"If we’re not winning, then we’re improving and that’s the standard. We’re not coming in here being defeated, giving lackluster effort, but always winning and improving hopefully.”

Coming off a 13-9 record last season, Anthony knows he’ll have to retool his roster a little bit, but it’s simple in trying to replicate last year's success.

“Fundmentals, making sure we’re in shape and then the mentality in some of the things I believe that young men need to be taught at this age, helping them go about certain challenges, the ways to deal with ups and downs, being prepared mentality as much as being ready physically and sound fundamentals,” Anthony said.

He said building those relationships and trust right away is so key in the early going because that will empower the players to do more.

“The buy-in from my guys last year was tremendous and the buy-in that I seem to have so far and some of the energy already. I appreciate the trust that they’ve shown me so far,” Anthony said.

Hayden entered Friday's Class 3A state semifinal against Santa Fe Trail without injured senior Kade Mitchell, one of its top players on offense, defense and special teams.

But Mitchell's teammates quickly picked up the slack, none more than junior Mason Becker, as Hayden rolled to its third straight state title game appearance with a 46-0 home romp past previously-unbeaten Santa Trail.

Taking over for Mitchell at halfback, Becker rushed for 201 yards on 14 carries, including touchdown runs of 53 and 65 yards, while also kicking a 25-yard field and three of three extra points and completing a 2-point conversion pass, as Hayden reeled off its 12th straight victory.

"Kade's a good player, he's a competitor out there, but Mason's grown into it,'' Hayden coach Bill Arnold said. "He's got some speed and he does a really, really good job of reading the blocks in front of him, probably better than anybody else on the team, honestly.

"I'm proud of them. We've got some good players out here that are in a situation where they've got seniors in front of them with the experience. They're all getting better and we've still got some room for growth, so we hope this next week we get some good practices in.''

Becker played running back earlier in his carrier, which helped make filling in for Mitchell an easy transition.

"I like it,'' Becker said. "I don't care. I can play anywhere, it doesn't matter to me.''

After recovering Santa Fe Trail's onsides kick attempt to open the game, Hayden scored the only touchdown it would need on a 10-yard run from senior Jackson McGivern just 1:46 in the first quarter.

An interception from senior Logan Saenz set up a one-play Wildcat scoring drive, a 28-yard TD strike from senior quarterback Connor Hanika to senior Makhi Kidd followed by a 2-point conversion to put Hayden in front 14-0.

After taking over on downs after Santa Fe Trail made a rare drive into Hayden territory, Becker burst loose for his 53-yard TD two plays later and hit junior Daniel Moore for a 2-point conversion and the rout was on.

"That was a big momentum switch,'' Becker said. "I saw the seam and I just went and scored.''

Hayden forced a Santa Fe Trail punt on the Chargers' next possession and senior Jude Krentz scored from a yard out (Becker kick) to cap the Wildcats' 29-point first-quarter onslaught with 10 seconds remaining.

The Wildcats tacked on Becker's 25-yard field goal with 38 seconds left in the half to put Hayden in command 32-0 at the break.

Krentz scored his second touchdown of the night on a 15-yard run midway through the third quarter before Becker ended the scoring on his 65-yard TD with 5:05 remaining, forcing a running clock the rest of the way.

Senior Julion Daniels led 11-1 Santa Fe Trail with 59 rushing yards on 14 attempts while junior Trevin Cox, one of three quarterbacks used by the Chargers, passed for 104 yards.

Santa Fe Trail starting quarterback Rigley Sleichter did not return after being injured in the first half.

With Friday's win Hayden advances to face 12-0 Andale, a 41-7 winner over Rock Creek, in the 3A championship game for the second straight season.

  • Hayden outlasts Jeff West 43-29 to advance to Class 3A semifinal

    Todd Fertig

Having been blown out in the first meeting with Hayden, Jefferson West gave the Wildcats a fight in the Class 3A quarterfinal matchup Friday at Hayden. The Tigers closed to within seven points in the fourth period before ultimately falling, 43-29.

The Wildcats blasted Jefferson West 42-0 in the final week of the regular season. But the Tigers followed that loss with two playoff victories to set up a rematch. The Tigers were more physical and more efficient in the second meeting, a spirited contest marred by numerous personal fouls and some bickering both during and after the game.

Leading by just seven points with 9:39 left, the Wildcats rose to the challenge, scoring twice in the final six minutes to hold Jefferson West at bay.

“That’s a good team right there,” Hayden junior Mason Becker said of the Tigers. “Last time we played them, we beat them by a little bit. But they fight hard all the way to the end. They have great coaching and great players.”

Hayden caught the Tigers with a quick strike to open the contest. On just the second play from scrimmage, Hayden quarterback Connor Hanika uncorked a bomb to Becker that resulted in a 71-yard score.

JudeKrentz2025JW 4Hayden senior Jude Krentz ran for a pair of touchdowns in Friday's 42-29 Class 3A quarterfinal win over Jefferson West. [Photo by Rex Wolf/TSN]

At the close of the first period, Hanika beat the defense on a nine-yard race to the right pilon to give Hayden its second touchdown. Jude Krentz added the Wildcats’ third score early in the second period, and a rout similar to the one that occurred in late October appeared imminent.

But when Hayden turned the ball over on downs midway through the second period, life was breathed into the Tigers, who appeared on the ropes trailing 22-0.

Jefferson West freshman quarterback Brixton Schwinn, unable to get the passing game going in the first meeting, suddenly found his rhythm. A pass to Crayton Holman went for 41 yards, moving the visitors into Hayden territory for the first time on the night. Four plays later, Schwinn hit Holman for the Tigers’ first score in six periods played against Hayden this season.

The Tigers got another break when Hayden senior back Kade Mitchell came out of the locker room for the second half with his right knee tightly wrapped and packed with ice. The senior has accounted for over 1,400 yards from scrimmage and 21 touchdowns on the season, but he would make no more contributions in this suddenly competitive battle.

Shifting to running back on certain sets and producing a spark on the ground was Becker, who typically lines up on the perimeter.

“Kade went out and someone had to step up,” Becker said. “We all had to step up. I came in and was just going to give my all for the dude next to me.”

XanderBlasing2025JW 2Senior Xander Blasing had a big night on both sides of the ball in Friday's 43-29 Hayden Class 3A playoff win over Jefferson West. [Photo by Rex Wolf/TSN]

Quickly after the break, Hayden added another score on a 30-yard pass from Hanika to a leaping Xander Blasing. The 29-8 lead looked safe.

But Schwinn and the Tigers benefitted from a couple of Hayden penalties to get into the red zone again. The freshman quarterback connected with his junior brother, Brody Schwinn, combining for their 18th touchdown pass of the season.

Then early in the fourth period, the Tigers capitalized on a turnover deep in Hayden territory for another score, this time a short run by the younger Schwinn. Hayden’s lead was cut to 29-22 with 9:39 remaining.

“They throw the ball all over the place,” Hayden coach Bill Arnold said of Jefferson West. “They spread you out. They get a little bit of a mismatch here and there, but I thought our kids played well.”

Hayden responded with a drive that culminated with a 16-yard scoring run by Krentz. Next, Hayden’s Logan Power picked off a Schwinn pass to set up a 3-yard touchdown by Jackson McGivern and finally Hayden could rest easy. A late touchdown by Jefferson West only narrowed the final score to 43-29.

“I felt like we played pretty good,” Arnold said. “We had to make some adjustments when Kade didn’t come back out in the second half. I thought our kids played hard. We made some mistakes. (Jefferson West) made some good plays as well. But in the end, it’s survive and advance.”

Hayden will host yet another playoff game next Friday, this time against 11-0 Santa Fe Trail, which held off Holton 28-26.

Becker produced an impressively versatile stat line on the night. In addition to the 71-yard scoring reception, he added 78 yards rushing on nine carries. He booted each of his kickoffs out of the end zone, converted all five extra point kicks he attempted, and his two punts averaged 44.5 yards.

Jefferson West’s freshman quarterback Schwinn threw for 292 yards and also rushed for 61 yards. His brother, Brody, caught eight passes for 114 yards.

The Tigers completed their season with an 8-3 record, one of the best in the school’s recent history.

Hayden's Kade Mitchell fumbled on his first carry of Friday's home Class 3A regional playoff game against Wellsville.

But that would be the only negative of the night for the 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior star, who powered the 10-0 Wildcats to a 42-0 win over the Eagles with four touchdowns and more than 100 yards rushing and receiving.

KadeMitchell2025JW 1Hayden senior Kade Mitchell scored four touchdowns on the night -- two rushing and two receiving -- as the Wildcats advanced to the Class 3A quarterfinals with a 42-0 win over Wellsville. [File photo/TSN]

"You just have to stay level-headed,'' Mitchell said of the fumble. "I knew my guys have got me, they're going to back me up. I trusted them all night and it's all thanks to them. They picked me up right away and I love these guys.''

Hayden led 21-0 at the half, with Mitchell scoring all three touchdowns for the Wildcats.

After the two teams traded turnovers on their first two possessions, Mitchell capped an 8-play, 80-yard drive with a 36-yard TD run (Mason Becker kick) with 3:37 left in the opening quarter after the Wildcats got an interception from junior Logan Power.

After Wellsville had a TD wiped out by a holding penalty on its ensuing possession, Becker came up with Hayden's second interception of the game, ending the Eagles' scoring threat.

Six plays later Hayden senior quarterback Connor Hanika found a wide-open Mitchell for a 62-yard TD (Becker kick) at the 7:45 mark of the second quarter.

"I was a little free and Connor threw a great ball and I just had to walk in,'' Mitchell said. "It was a great night, it was fun.''

Then, after a Wellsville punt Hanika and Mitchell hooked up again, this time for a 63-yard score (Becker kick) with 2:01 left before halftime.

Wellsville (6-4) drove into the red zone twice in the opening half but came up empty both times.

Senior Jackson McGivern scored from 4 yards out (Becker kick) to put Hayden up 28-0 midway through the third quarter and senior Jude Krentz scored on a 9-yard scamper 28 seconds into the fourth stanza (Becker kick).

Mitchell then put the capper on his big night with a 68-yard run (Becker kick) to account for the final margin.

Mitchell rushed for 131 yards on just seven carries and caught three passes for 149 yards while Hanika completed 10 of 13 passes for 211 yards and the two TDs to Mitchell.

Krentz added 72 rushing yards on seven totes.

"Wellsville's a good team,'' Hayden coach Bill Arnold said. "They came out and they played hard. I think we had a situation where maybe some of our formations messed them up a little bit and we got some good mismatches out there.

"I was pleased with our kids' effort. I thought Jackson McGivern played a heck of a game on defense and played really well. It was a team effort. We're not going to be bigger than anybody up front, but we do play hard and that's what I like about this group.''

It couldn't have been any closer.

Washburn Rural, top-ranked in the 6A coaches rankings, didn't have an individual medalist (top 20) on Saturday, but the Junior Blues put four runners in the top 28 places to lead the way as Rural captured the team championship by a single point (100-101) over Blue Valley.

Swedlund said at mid-week that he expected a tight race for the title.

"Basically the top five in the rankings are all just points from each other,'' Swedlund told TopSports.news. "There are several teams that have an opportunity (to win the team crown), so you've got to take it.

"We're not taking anything for granted and if you want to end up on the podium (top three teams) you're going to have to run well. We've been fortunate to have some good teams that were in the conversation and when you put yourself in the conversation there is no reason not to make your goal the absolute top. You want to be the best, you want to win, so that's what you shoot for.''

HUTCHINSON --After rolling to the Pool II championship on Friday and advancing to the Class 4A championship match with a dominating semifinal performance, No. 6 seed Hayden's bid for a sixth state volleyball championship came up just short Saturday afternoon, with top seed Andale taking a 25-12, 25-27, 25-22 win over the Wildcats at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Hayden (33-10) never led in the first game as Andale (36-1) jumped out to 8-2, 15-6 and 19-8 leads on the way to the decisive win.

The Wildcats bounced back in the second set and led 17-8 and 19-10 but Andale came all the way back to take a 25-24 lead before big kills from Hayden sophomore Hailey Schmidtlein got Hayden over the hump.

The third set was tied 13 times before Andale got the upper hand after the final tie at 19-19.

"The first game, we kind of just got in our way, and that's part of volleyball,'' Hayden coach Corrinne McGreevy said. "Sometimes it's a trickle down effect and you start making errors and you just can't stop. And we could not stop.

"But we bounced back. They had short-term memory. They moved on and they let it go. The last one could have been a 50-50 game. It could have gone either way. Those were two incredible teams. What a great state championship match. That was awesome.''

Hayden's nail-biter in the title match came after the Wildcats rolled to a 25-18, 25-8 win over Paola in the semifinals.

But Rural, top-ranked in the 6A coaches rankings, is one of those teams, and Swedlund is excited to see what Saturday holds for his young Junior Blues, who have five sophomores in their state lineup.

"Basically the top five in the rankings are all just points from each other,'' Swedlund said.

Washburn Rural tied Manhattan for last Saturday's regional title at Wichita's Clapp Park, with the Indians taking the team crown on a tiebreaker (highest finishing sixth runner).

Sophomores Duke Graf, Clayton Fink and Henry Laubach finished second, seventh and 12th to lead the Junior Blues while senior Centennial League champion Brooks Kehoe finished 19th and sophomore Jaxson Adams 22nd to round out Rural's top five and senior Wyatt Shorb and sophomore Brady Meek finished 28th and 29th.

Rural finished sixth as a team in last year's state meet, with Laubach finishing 14th to earn a state medal.

Washburn Rural suffered heavy graduation losses off its girls team that finished second in, losing out to Olathe West on a tiebreaker, in last year's state meet, but the Junior Blues, ranked fifth in 6A, earned a trip to state with a strong runnerup regional finish to Centennial champ Manhattan.

Seniors Emily Graf and Kenzie Maddox and sophomore Reese Beardslee return from last year's runnerup Rural team and will be joined on Saturday by freshmen Alyson Hinck, Morgan Munson, Clara Dillon and Lilly Palmer.

Graf led Rural with a fifth-place finish at regionals while Hinck was eighth, Munson ninth, Maddox 16th, Beardslee 17th, Dillon 21st and Palmer 36th.

"You've got some young girls, so you just want them to get out there and run the best that they can and see where you land,'' Swedlund said.

Graf will be shooting for her third 6A state medal, finishing 14th a year ago after a 19th-place showing as a sophomore.

Topeka High sophomore Easton Davis posted a 14th-place regional finish to qualify as an individual for the 6A boys race.

The 6A girls race is scheduled for 10:35 a.m. Saturday while the boys race is slated for 12:20 p.m.

  • State volleyball: Silver Lake looking to cap dream season with Class 3A state title

Veteran Silver Lake volleyball coach Sarah Johnson expected her team to be good this fall, but she is quick to admit that she never really expected the 41-1 record that the Eagles will take into this week's Class 3A state tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Now the aim for top-seeded Silver Lake is to finish off its dream season with the school's 10th state title and first since 2018.

"I honestly wasn't expecting this record at this point in the season, however, I did have very high hopes for this squad,'' Johnson said. "My first feeling of, 'this team has the potential to go far,' was this summer at the Mokan volleyball tournament at Washburn University.

"We came out first at that tourney with some tough competition. There is just something special about them. They are all bought in, willing to give their all, okay with being held accountable, and have a love and respect for one another cheering the other one on.''

Silver Lake's only loss came against 5A sub-state finalist Shawnee Heights in its 10th match of the season and the Eagles have reeled off 32 straight wins entering 3A pool play Thursday.

"Leadership and unity is definitely part of it,'' Johnson said of the Eagles' success.  "A good sign of leadership is the ability to listen. I feel that they are all open to each other's ideas and feedback. They take it and learn from it. A big thing I've seen with this group leading to the success they've had thus far is the ability to not get rattled.

"We talk about getting uncomfortable in practices so when we are faced with uncomfortable situations in matches, it's familiar and we are comfortable. They have that calm confidence that helps them in those tough situations.''

Johnson knows that the Eagles are likely to encounter some of those tough situations in a 3A field that includes five teams with at least 33 wins and all eight with at least 26.

But the Silver Lake coach knows her team is extrememly capable of answering the challenge.

"Yes, this weekend will be tough,'' Johnson said. "Our goal is to keep at it like we have all year -- limit our own errors, not let a team go on runs and adjust to different players/teams quickly and efficiently without getting rattled.

"(We want to) continue rising to the occasion and competing at a high level physically and mentally.''

In the brand new state tournament format installed by the Kansas State High School Activities Association, the 3A field will play its three pool matches on Thursday before a day off on Friday and the semifinals, championship and third-place matches on Saturday.

The Eagles will open their state bid at 11 a.m. Thursday with a Pool I match against No. 8 seed Hesston (26-12). After a match off, Silver Lake will return to the court at 1 p.m. to face No. 5 seed Ellsworth (32-8) before closing out pool play with a 3 o'clock match against No. 4 Wichita Trinity (28-5).

On the other side of the 3A bracket are No. 2 seed Riverton (36-4), No. 3 Hoisington (36-4), No. 6 Holton (34-9) and No. 7 Osage City (27-12).

The top two finishers in both pools will advance to 9 a.m. semifinals on Saturday, followed by the championship and third-place matches.

Washburn Rural takes aim on ninth Class 6A state crown

Eight-time Class 6A state champion Washburn Rural will be looking for title No. 9 this weekend in its ninth straight state appearance.

The 30-7 Junior Blues earned the No. 4 seed for Friday and Saturday's 6A event at Tony's Pizza Event Center in Salina with a 30-7 record.

Six of Rural's seven losses have come against state tournament teams in 6A, 5A and 4A, while the seventh defeat came at the hands of a Gardner-Edgerton team that played in a 6A sub-state final.

And now Washburn Rural coach Kevin Bordewick, who has led the Junior Blues to all eight of their state titles and ranks No. 2 on Kansas' all-time wins list, is hoping his team can step up its game even more this weekend.

"It's all about raising your level of play and your level of intensity, your mental toughness, and all those factors go into it,'' Bordewick said. "But we still have to be us. We can't be somebody we're not.

"The greatest teams make the routine plays more often than just making great plays and if we can just make routine plays more often than the other team we should be alright.''

The Junior Blues will open Pool I play in Friday's first match of the day at 10 a.m., facing No. 5 seed Olathe West (26-7), and Bordewick said he wants all of his team's focus to be on that match against an Owls team that defeated Rural 15-25, 25-19, 25-22 early in the season.

"We're just worried about Olathe West,'' he said. "We haven't really talked about any other teams yet. We did not feel like we played well against them, but they had a lot to do with that, too, when we played them way back in early Sept.

"I think overall, when you put everything together, we've come a really long way. We expect a lot out of ourselves and we have standards that people strive to get to and I think they've done that. They've continued what we've had for several years really, really well. I'm pretty proud of all of them.''

After a match break after facing Olathe West, Washburn Rural will face No. 8 seed Free State (20-12) at 12 p.m. before closing out pool play at 3 p.m. against top seed and two-time defending state champ Mill Valley (31-4).

On the other side of the 6A bracket are No. 2 seed Blue Valley West (30-4), No. 3 Wichita Northwest (30-6), No. 6 Manhattan (27-8) and No. 7 Olathe Northwest (28-9).

The top two finishers in both pools will advance to 1 p.m. semifinals on Saturday, followed by the championship and third-place matches.
