  • State swimming/diving: Cowdin looking to cap standout prep career with state medal

Jaxon Cowdin got into diving almost by accident, but the Topeka High senior will end his high school career in this week's Class 6A state meet as the most accomplished one-meter diver in school, something he's very proud of.

Cowdin credits older sister Maisie for helping getting him into the sport.

"She was a lifeguard over at one of the pools and I used to go there like all day and would dive off the diving boards and swim all the time, so she was like, 'Hey, you should probably go try dive,' Cowdin said. "So I came out for it and like the first two or three weeks I ended up breaking the school record and ended qualifying for state. So I'm pretty glad I did it.''

Fast forward to four years later and Cowdin has won four straight city diving titles and won his third straight Centennial League championship last Thursday.

"I think it's a cool thing for Topeka High School history,'' Cowdin said. "I think I've done something that very people can say that they've done, so I have a lot of pride in that.''

Now Cowdin is setting his sights this weekend at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatics Center on the one thing that's eluded him -- a state medal.

Cowdin, along with senior teammates Dominic and Malachi Delgado, will compete in the preliminaries and semifinals on Thursday, with the finals on Saturday.

"Probably the ultimate goal is going and getting a medal,'' Cowdin said. "I feel like I've come pretty close in the past three years but I've always been just short.

"I think I'm definitely more focused this year than I have been in past years and I think it's been especially good with the twins kind of riding up on me recently. I think that's definitely led to better competition.''

The three-day state meet will get under way with Thursday's diving prelims and semis, with the 6A event at 9:30 a.m. and 5A-1A at 4:30 p.m.

The 6A swimming preliminaries will start at 9 a.m. on Friday, with the 5A-1A prelims following at 4 p.m.

Championship 6A finals will get under way at 9 a.m. Friday, followed by the 5A-1A finals at 4 o'clock.

City champion and Centennial League runner up will be well-represented in the 6A state meet, with senior Luke Lemke (200-yard individual medley, 100 backstroke), sophomore Andres Morao-Jaspe (200 IM, 500 free) and freshman Thomas Appuhn (200 IM, 100 backstroke) all qualifying in two individual events while freshman Castle Wallace is qualified in the 100 breaststroke.

The Junior Blues are also qualified in the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay.

In 5A-1A Seaman senior Peyton Holmes (50 free, 100 free) and sophomore Kinser Barbosa (200 free, 100 butterfly) are both qualified in two individual events, as are Shawnee Heights seniors Truman Brede (200 free, 100 backstroke) and Evan Hoobler (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke).

Hayden senior Palmer Heskett is an individual qualifier in the 200 IM while both Seaman and Hayden are qualified in the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

After advancing to the Class 6A-5A state championship match as a sophomore, the last two seasons have been a bit of a nightmare for Seaman girls wrestling star Koti Best.

A four-time state qualifier and two-time state placer, Best missed a big chunk of her junior season with concussion issues although she did return -- briefly -- in time for state.

"I wrestled the first round and I got re-concussed,'' Best lamented.

Best was back at full strength for the start of the current campaign, but was forced to the sidelines again after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the Newton tournament.

"It was not a good time,'' Best said. "I was so scared. I was like, 'I can't lose my season two years in a row.' ''

KotiBest100wins 2Seaman senior Koti Best reached the 100-win milestone in Saturday's Class 5A West regional en route to the 125-pound title. [Seaman Athletics]

Fortunately, that didn't happen, with Best returning to action with a dominant performance in Saturday's 5A West regional tournament at Seaman while capturing the 125-pound title and reaching the 100-win career milestone during the tournament.

"It's been so frustrating because I was so close and then I just kept getting shot down and shot down and hurt and hurt, but it motivated me a lot,'' Best said.

And Best got through regionals without any further damage to her shoulder.

"I felt very good,'' she said. "My shoulder was a little bit sore, but that's expected.''

Best, now 17-2 on the season, went 4-0 on the day with none of her matches lasting more than 1 minute, 25 seconds.

Best posted 30-second, 1:02 and 25-second pins to reach the championship match before defeating Great Bend freshman Micah Ellegood in a final that was halted at the 1:25 mark due to an injury to Ellegood that occurred during a Best takedown.

"I felt so awful, I felt so bad,'' said Best, who was leading 9-2 when the match was stopped.

"We've been there and I don't want to see anybody ever get hurt,'' said Seaman coach Jordan Best, Koti's father. "That's not how we want to win matches. It's unfortunate, but I hope she makes a quick recovery and I know she can bounce back. She's going to be a stud.''

Best will now look forward to her final state meet Feb. 28-March 1 at Park City's Hartman Arena as one of seven state qualifiers for the Vikings.

Seaman senior 120-pounder Taylie Heston (29-7) also advanced to the regional finals before she dropped 2-1 four-overtime decision to Emporia junior Kensley Medrano.

Seaman, which finished sixth as a team, also got fourth-place finishes from senior 110-pounder Natalie Smith (26-9) and 130-pound junior Makenna Stuke (23-13) and sixth-place finishes from freshman 115-pounder Avery Villines (13-16) and senior 190-pounder Abagail Soppe (11-9) and a seventh-place showing from freshman Savannah Rivera (11-24).

"Actually that's a little bit more than I envisioned happening, so it's a good day,'' Seaman coach Jordan Best said. "We had some girls that themselves didn't think they would actually make the state tournament that made it so that's awesome.''

Topeka West qualified two wrestlers for state, with sophomore 235-pounder Monica Stewart (12-13) finishing sixth and sophomore 170-pounder Haylee Jessepe (6-12) finishing eighth.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel won the regional team title by a 218.5-180.5 margin over Hays.

Seaman junior basketball standouts KaeVon Bonner and Maddie Gragg have been selected by the Dan Key Farmers Insurance Agency as the Rising Stars of the Week.

The Dan Key Agency will recognize top Shawnee County underclassmen throughout the bulk of the 2024-2025 school year.

Here’s a brief look at the accomplishments of Bonner and Gragg over the past week:

Bonner went 12 of 15 at the free throw line and connected on a pair of 3-pointers as the Vikings improved to 12-4 overall and 9-3 in the conference.

Gragg, a 5-foot-10 guard, led all scorers with 23 points Tuesday night as undefeated and top-ranked (Class 5A) Seaman took a 64-54 United Kansas Conference home victory over Shawnee Heights.

Gragg scored 17 points with five 3-pointers in the first half against the T-Birds as Seaman opened up a 17-point halftime advantage en route to improving to 16-0 overall and 12-0 in the UKC.

But the 5-foot-10 junior made up for lost time in a hurry in Tuesday's rematch against the T-Birds, riding a monster first half to a game-high 23 points as the defending Class 5A state champions ran their winning streak to 22 games with a 64-54 home United Kansas Conference victory.

Gragg scored 17 points in the first half with five 3-pointers and formed a dynamic one-two punch with senior Anna Becker, who had 14 first-half points with a pair of 3s on the way to a 21-point night as the Vikings took control in the opening two quarters while improving to 16-0 overall and 11-0 in the conference.

Gragg said Tuesday's win was a welcome bounce back for her and the team after last year's Heights loss.

"I had a concussion, so I didn't play that game,'' Gragg said. "I was there sitting on the bench and I remember that game. The first half was good (tonight). It was high percentage shots and we kept going for like the one more pass. It was just a good half all around. You always want to beat a rival.''

Shawnee Heights (11-5 overall, 8-4) actually outscored Seaman 30-23 in the second half, but the T-Birds were unable to overcome a dismal first half that saw the Vikings lead by as many as 20 points on the way to a 41-24 halftime bulge.

"Obviously we knew what happened last year, it was in the back of our minds,'' Becker said. "We didn't forget.''

Gragg and Becker combined for 12 of Seaman's 16 first-half field goals, including the seven treys, as the Vikings shot 53.3 percent from the field in the half.

"It felt like we were shooting the ball great,'' Becker said. "Shoot, I think Maddie went 5 for 5 (on 3s) and we were passing it around well, so you can't ask for much more than that. It was a great team win and I just love that we got to play another inter-city school. It's always a fun rivalry and a game to look forward to.''

The Seaman boys swim team placed third in the top-heavy United Kansas Conference boys championship meet at Capitol Federal Natatorium Tuesday.

Lansing placed first in all three relays and took first in four of the nine individual events on the night to rack up 264 points. Basehor-Linwood came in second with 227. De Soto finished in fifth but took home three of the individual medals.

That left just one first-place medal in the Capital City. Shawnee Heights senior Truman Brede took home the gold in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 56.59.

"I’m a little disappointed on the time,” Brede said. “I took first in the city meet with a (55.83), so I kind of added a little bit. I knew the kid from Lansing is tough competition. He beat me in this meet last year, so I was really focused on beating him this year.”

Brede finished 10th in Class 5A state in the backstroke as a sophomore, then moved up to ninth as a junior. He said he is ranked fourth in the state currently. He said the UKC meet is good preparation for the state meet.

“It’s really about facing the teams that I know are going to be up there, Lansing being a big one. They have a lot of top swimmers coming to state,” Brede said. “The only thing we don’t get with the league meet is the Wichita schools. Wichita schools are also a lot of top placers.”

City champ in the 50 yard freestyle, Peyton Holmes, shaved .31 seconds off his time from the city meet to finish second at the UKC meet.

“I still think I can go faster,” said Holmes. “This is a really tough meet. I’m happy with second for now.

“Getting third (in the UKC) is cool. We got third at city and there was less competition there. So third here is a lot better than what we did at city. We kind of redeemed it a little bit.”

“Lansing and Basehor-Linwood are great programs, so we feel good about taking third,” Seaman coach Bernie Tuck said. “We’ve had some challenges this season, so making it to this point is exciting. The guys can be self-reflective on their performance. That’s always good to give you an eye-opener going into the state meet.”

In a poll of league coaches, Tuck was voted UKC co-ocach of the Year.

“It’s always nice to be recognized for the work,” Tuck said. “I know I’m not the only coach that, you know, works seven days a week, so it’s good to be in a great community of the coaches who I admire and look up to.”

Tuesday's United Kansas Conference matchup between No. 7-ranked Seaman and No. 8 Shawnee Heights included a little bit of everything -- four players fouling out, four players picking up technical fouls and a spectacular 39-point performance by T-Bird senior Jaret Sanchez.

But in the end, homestanding Seaman came up with just enough big plays down the stretch to escape with a 68-66 win in a game that included 11 ties and 11 lead changes.

"We have tremendous respect for their team and the season that they've had and knew how tough it would be to compete with them,'' said Seaman coach Craig Cox, whose team improved to 12-4 overall and 9-3 in the UKC. "I give our guys credit for doing enough to get it done.''

Viking junior KaeVon Bonner scored 13 of his team-high 26 points in the fourth quarter to help offset Sanchez's big night for Shawnee Heights (13-3, 9-3).

"He stepped up when we really needed him to and kind of answered what Sanchez had going on for them because we couldn't stop the kid,'' Cox said.

"It was a very competitive game because we knew they're one of the top teams and getting that big one right there was really big to us,'' Bonner said.

Shawnee Heights led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter and took a 25-23 advantage to the locker room at halftime, leading by 5 late in the half before Bonner nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Heights led by 5 again early in the second half and led 40-36 late in the third period before Bonner hit a pair of free throws on a technical foul to cut Seaman's deficit to 40-39 at the start of the fourth.

Seaman's girls won the team title by a 3,000-2,949 margin over Washburn Rural, including the four Baker format games, as Duncan won the individual championship with a 623 series while 2024 champion Snyder was second with a 607 series.

Washburn Rural, third as a team in 2024, took the boys team title by a 3,505-3,398 margin over Shawnee Heights, including the Baker games.

Glinka led the way for the Junior Blues, riding a first-game 278 to a 734 series and the individual title by a 72-pin margin over teammate Tyler Faurot, who rolled a 662 series.

Glinka's winning total on Friday was five pins better than his winning series of 729 in the 2024 city meet, following up his 278 with 232 and 224 games.

"I had a good look all day,'' Glinka said. "The third game I struggled in the end, but I'm really happy how I bowled. Obviously I wanted to go back to back.''

Glinka was also thrilled that Rural could claim the team crown.

"I was proud of our team,'' he said. "Last year I felt like I did well, but the rest of my team struggled a little bit, but I felt like this year the whole team did great.

"We were really positive, had a lot of energy. I was extremely proud of my team.''

Snyder improved her 2024 winning score of 606 by a pin on Friday, but Duncan stole the show in her first city meet, putting together scores of 203, 235 and 185 to take individual honors and lead the Vikings to the team repeat.

"I think its going pretty well,'' Duncan said about the 2025 season. "We really are good at keeping each other's spirits up, especially if one gets down, and I just think it's just a good team overall.

    "We're very happy overall.''

The contest started as a scoring duel between Maranatha’s Daniel Dean and Cair Paravel’s Lucas Marichal, with Dean tallying the 3-11 Eagles’ first five points as the visitors took an early 5-2 lead.

Marichal answered with his first of four 3-pointers of the night, and following a free throw from Dean, the Cair Paravel junior made consecutive baskets to give the Lions (6-8) a 9-6 lead they would not relinquish.

The 3-point barrage continued for the Lions, with triples from Chase Hastert and Judah Congdon before Marichal knocked down another shot from behind the arc to give Cair Paravel a 24-17 advantage after the first quarter.

The Lions showed off their defensive prowess in the second quarter, allowing only six points off three Maranatha field goals.

Hastert and Caleb Cleverdon hit 3-pointers in the frame for Cair Paravel, while Jase Pavlik recorded his first five points of the evening in the quarter as the Lions took a 38-23 lead into halftime.

After the break Pavlik and Cleverdon found baskets in the first minute of the third quarter, extending the lead to 19 and forcing a quick timeout from the Eagles.

The Lions pushed the lead as high as 21, but a pair of baskets from Dean and a 3-pointer from Joe Allen brought the deficit back to 13 as Cair Paravel held a 46-33 lead midway through the third quarter.

Any sign of a comeback was quickly put to rest, as Marichal knocked down another 3-pointer and Blaine Durbin added a pair of baskets, with the Lions leading 55-38 after three quarters.

Cair Paravel finished the game with a balanced offensive attack, with five points from Marichal and four from Pavlik in the fourth quarter.

Senior Billy Lanich added a layup in the closing seconds to seal the 19-point victory for the Lions. Marichal led all scorers with 19 points for Cair Paravel.

Pavlik recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Hastert added 10 points off the bench.

The Lions shot just over 48 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Eagles, 34-18.

Dean led Maranatha with 18 points on 7-10 shooting while also pulling down six rebounds. Pennbrook Shaver tallied 14 points, while center Luke Shrader scored nine points with six rebounds.

Cair Paravel coach Chip Kueffer was impressed with all aspects of his team’s performance in the win.

“I think defense always leads to offense,'' Kueffer said. "We were really focused defensively on (Maranatha’s Owen Smail and Luke Shrader), both of those guys can get 25 a night,” Kueffer said. “We really just focused on making them uncomfortable, picking them up at halfcourt, and then offensively, you don’t have anything to think about.”

Despite a significant size disadvantage, Cair Paravel grabbed 16 more rebounds than Maranatha, and the effort did not go unnoticed by Kueffer.

“We’re giving up a lot of size, and they play their hearts out,” Kueffer said of his squad. “Everybody has to do their part to defend and rebound. If you’re on the floor, you’re rebounding. If you’re on the floor, you’re defending, no excuses. So I was glad to see that out of everybody today.”

Cair Paravel will be back in action on Thursday against Eskridge-Mission Valley. The Lions will look to avenge a 50-48 loss on Jan. 21.

EMPORIA -- In a tough contest for the championship of the Glacier’s Edge Tournament, the top-ranked team in Class 5A, the Seaman Lady Vikings, defeated the second-ranked team in 6A, the Derby Panthers, 63-50, on Saturday.

The Lady Vikes improved to 13-0 on the season by defeating two of the top four teams in Class 6A on their way to the tournament title.

“We brought it today from an energy standpoint,'' Seaman coach Matt Tinsley said. "Whether it was rebounding, plus-one plays or getting on the floor for loose balls, we did what we had to do to beat a good team in Derby.”

As one should expect a championship game to be, the teams went back and forth throughout the first quarter and Seaman led 15-13 with a little over a minute remaining in the quarter. On a battle for a loose ball, senior Jaida Stallbaumer fouled a Derby player, a couple of Panther players took exception and a technical was issued on one of the players. Senior Anna Becker knocked down both technical foul shots and Seaman ended the quarter on a 7-2 run, leading 22-15 at the end of the first stanza.

The second quarter was played evenly and the Lady Vikes were able to extend their lead to 37-29 at the half. Becker scored 8 points in the quarter, giving her 14 for the half.

Derby was able to cut the lead to 46-40 with 3:15 left in the third quarter, leading to a Seaman timeout. For the next two-plus minutes, neither team scored until a basket with 50 seconds by Stallbaumer. Derby was able to hit one free throw, but senior Kinley Wilhelm hit a jump shot at the buzzer to give Seaman a 50-41 lead going to the fourth quarter.

“Our ‘next play’ mentality was good throughout the game and I thought all the girls contributed in their own way to help us win this tournament,'' Tinsley said. "We talk all the time about how you can help us win a game just by making one play.”

Seaman’s lead never dropped below nine points throughout the final quarter and the Lady Vikes made their free throws down the stretch, posting the 13-point win.

The Lady Vikes improved to 11-0 on the season and will face the fourth ranked team in Class 6A, the Shawnee Mission South Raiders, in the tournament semifinals at 7:45 p.m Friday.

Nine players scored for Seaman with two scoring in double figures.

The game started with Seaman jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the first four minutes. In the quarter, Seaman assisted on four of their five baskets and led 11-5 after the first eight minutes.

The first three minutes of the second quarter was very sluggish -- several turnovers and missed shots from both teams. A short jump shot from senior Kinley Wilhelm was the only basket until the four-minute mark of the quarter when sophomore Maddie Gragg hit a 3-pointer to extend Seaman’s lead to 16-5. The Lady Grizzlies were held scoreless for the quarter and the Lady Vikes led at the half, 26-5.

Friday's semifinal games of the Glacier’s Edge Tournament had three of the top four-ranked teams in Class 6A (Wichita Heights No. 1, Derby No. 2, SM South No. 4) along with the top-ranked and defending state champion from Class 5A, Seaman, battling for the two spots in Saturday's championship game at Emporia High School.

The Seaman Lady Vikings defeated the Shawnee Mission South Raiders, 70-45 on Friday night, turning a 4-point game at halftime into a rout as Seaman scored 51 points in the second half.

The Lady Vikes improved to 12-0 on the season and will face the Derby Panthers, a 52-46 upset winner over Wichita Heights, in the championship game at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Over the first three minutes of the opening quarter, the Raiders jumped out to a 6-3 lead by beating the Lady Vikes off the dribble.  The Lady Vikes battled back with 10 points by junior Maddie Gragg and led at the end of the first quarter, 14-11. However, both teams were sloppy with the ball -- Seaman committed seven turnovers and SM South six.

The sloppy play continued in the second quarter, with both teams committing seven turnovers each. Senior Anna Becker made Seaman’s first and only field goal of the quarter with 5:00 remaining in the half. But the Lady Vikes' defense was stingy and held SM South to only two buckets in the quarter and led 19-15 at the half.

“I thought in the first half we struggled to get into a flow of the game,'' Seaman coach Matt Tinsley said. "Too many turnovers and we shot 5-21 from the field. That’s not a good combination, but our defense was solid and kept us in the game.”

Scoring offense made an appearance in the third quarter for both teams, as each team scored more points (Seaman 27, SM South 17) in the quarter than they had in the entire first half.

“The girls made a great adjustment at the half and just made the game simple,'' Tinsley said. "Anna hit back-to-back 3s to kind of jump-start us.”

But the gap was narrower than in many previous years, with other city schools claiming higher point totals.

Sophomore Andres Morao-Jaspe had the only perfect day, finishing first in two individual events and helping two Washburn Rural relay teams to firsts as well. Morao-Jaspe won the 200-yard individual medley and the 500 freestyle.

“I feel like a great sense of satisfaction coming out of this with the whole team,” Morao-Jaspe said. “I've been working a lot for this, for these moments.”

Seaman’s Peyton Holmes claimed first in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle events and was part of two relay teams that placed first and second. He did it despite sinus surgery a week ago, having practiced little since the procedure.

“It was hard to come back into it, but I believed I could win both my events,” Holmes said. “Competing in this city meet is really fun because my whole family could come, and just being in Hummer is fun.”

Washburn Rural placed first with 532 points while Topeka High’s 418.5 points edged Seaman and was cause for celebration for the Trojans.

“I’m really proud of my boys and feel like we had a great day,” Trojan coach Ken Bennett said.

He said Topeka High’s strong upper classes are bolstered this year by a group of freshmen who are contributing to varsity success.

“They came in raw, so to speak, and they stepped up,” Bennett said. “The older swimmers are bonding with the freshmen and showing them the way.”

One of the most impressive performances of the day was turned in by Topeka High senior swimmer/diver Jaxon Cowdin.

Cowdin won the city dive competition for the fourth consecutive year. But he also took fifth in the 50 freestyle and helped two Trojan relay teams to second and third-place finishes.

“Jaxon came in as a freshman and wanted to swim and dive,” Bennett said. “We told him to focus more on diving. As a senior he came out and was like, ‘I’m going to swim.’ It’s rare for someone to be able to do both because you have to practice so much to be a good diver.”

For the second year in a row, Washburn Rural won the city meet behind a first-year head coach. Bob Burdick replaced Janson Garman and had to rebuild the Washburn Rural roster.

Last year, we lost a whole lot of really fast guys. We took third at state last year and we graduated a whole bunch,” Burdick said. “When I took over, we had about 18 guys.

“We had seven guys who couldn't swim before they got to us, and we made them into swimmers. We had a couple of guys who just popped out of the woodwork and they had a little bit of swim background. They came back and they're just hammering it, and so we're building well. Success breeds success.”

But with his bid for a fourth straight city title coming up on Thursday, followed by Centennial League and Class 6A state competition, Cowdin served notice in Tuesday's Topeka High Invitational at the Capitol Federal Natatorium that he's rounding into form just in time for his stretch run.

In his first 11-dive competition of the season, Cowdin bested the field of nine divers with a score of 394.00, while Free State's Gavin McIntosh was second with a score of 351.75.

"It's more like a test of for one, stamina, and two, consistency, and three, who's got all their stuff put together,'' Cowdin said. "You see a lot of dudes crash and burn on 11 dives. I felt pretty decent, but there's still a lot to clean up.''

Cowdin hurt his ankle back on July 3rd, but his recovery from that injury has last a lot longer than he ever expected.

"It was not healing and it was bad for like a couple of months and then I finally started doing stuff on it, rehabbing it and everything like that and it's almost back to 100 percent now,'' Cowdin said.

Cowdin felt like he was a little bit behind at the start of the season, but is feeling good about where he is now.

"I think (the injury) definitely played a factor, but now that I'm starting to really kind of get into my groove of things, everything's getting better,'' he said.

Nex up is Thursday's city meet and Cowdin's shot at a perfect four for four city run.

"I really try not to think about it a whole lot,'' Cowdin said. "I try not to psych myself up or make myself nervous and I don't think I'm going to be nervous going into it at all.

"We're going to see what happens and obviously I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure I don't get beat, but if I do, hopefully it's by one of my teammates.''

Topeka High also got a win from Dawson Blankenship in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.04 seconds while Blankenship posted a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:25.96).

Lawrence Free State won the team championship by a 538-339 win over Lawrence, with Seaman third with 243 points.

Hayden finished sixth as a team, one point ahead of Topeka High (188-187).

Palmer Heskett finished fourth for the Wildcats in the 200 IM (2:29.52) while Ryan Carson was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:03.79).

Thursday's city meet at Cap Fed will get under way at 1:30 p.m.with the diving competition, followed by swimming competition at 5 p.m.

Both offenses took several minutes to warm up, with the visiting Trojans (0-12) jumping out to a quick 5-2 lead in the opening stages of the contest.

A 3-pointer from Landon Wiltz and a layup from KaeVon Bonner gave a five-point swing to the Vikings (9-3).

With little separation between the two teams early on, Seaman’s Matthew McConnaughey began his big screen-worthy first half performance, earning an and-one opportunity and completing the 3-point play to give the Vikings a 16-13 lead after one quarter of play.

Seaman used a big second quarter to pull away, out-scoring Topeka High 22-9 in the period.

The Vikings used a balanced attack to extend their lead, with 3-pointers from Griffin Zuniga and Bonner, along with a 3-point play from Wiltz.

Seaman closed the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 38-22 lead into halftime.

Despite a discouraging second quarter, Topeka High stayed within striking distance, scoring the first 5 points of the third quarter on a 3-pointer from Elisha Guest and a pair of free throws from Octavian McFadden.

The Vikings held on to the double-digit lead for the entirety of the third quarter, with Bonner adding seven of his team-high 16 points in the period.

The Trojans started the fourth quarter much like they did the third, with a quick basket from Jalen Aldridge and a 3-pointer from Mar’Saun Redmond cutting the deficit to seven.

With the lead shrinking, momentum swung back in favor of the hosts following a pair of free throws and a fast-break dunk from Finley to give the Vikings a 63-52 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

The teams continued to shoot at high percentages for the remainder of the contest, but the Vikings held the Trojans at bay.

Aldridge knocked down a pair of late 3-pointers for Topeka High to bring the game to its 73-64 final.

Bonner led Seaman with 16 points on 7-9 shooting in the victory. Finley chipped in with 15 points, while Wiltz added 14 points.

McConnaughey scored all 13 of his points in the first half, while leading the Vikings with seven rebounds.

Seaman shot just over 56 percent from the floor as a team.

Aldridge led all scorers with 25 points for Topeka High while Bryson McComas fell one rebound short of a double-double, tallying 12 points and nine boards. Guest knocked down three triples for nine points.

Seaman coach Craig Cox was impressed with multiple phases of his team’s offense in the victory.

“If we’re able to score over 70 points in a game, we’re going to be pretty happy with that,” Cox said. “We like the way that we can shoot the basketball, and we’re getting better at moving without the ball and hitting cutters and getting some nice shots.”
