HUTCHINSON --Silver Lake's fourth volleyball match of the season against Holton Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena ended the same way the previous three had, but this time Lake's 25-21, 25-19 win over the Wildcats clinched the state's biggest prize for the Eagles -- a Class 3A state championship.

Saturday's win in the title match put the capper on a 46-1 Silver Lake season, which ended with a 37-match winning streak.

“This feels so good and even more for the girls,'' said Silver Lake coach Sarah Johnson, who won her fifth state title while leading the Eagles to the 10th championship in school history. "They’re deserving and have worked so hard. We had the right group of girls out there to make it happen and I’m so proud of them.

"I wasn’t expecting only one loss throughout the season. We try to play tough teams and play in tournaments with good competition. The girls didn’t let themselves get rattled in matches and could adjust quickly in the moment. They have a belief in themselves and a confidence in one another and that was huge for us today.”

Top seed Silver Lake defeated Heston, Ellsworth and Wichita Trinity in pool play on Thursday and advanced to the championship match with a 25-22, 26-24 semifinal win over Hoisington.

Holton made a surprising run to the title match from the No. 6 seed, defeating second-seeded Riverton, third-seeded Hoisington and seventh seeded Osage City in pool play on Thursday. The Wildcats then defeated fourth-seeded Wichita Trinity 23-25, 25-23, 25-20 in the semifinal on Saturday morning.

The opening set of the final began as a back-and-forth affair with neither team having a lead larger than two, when Holton went ahead 12-10. Silver Lake responded with a 6-1 run to take a 16-13 lead, forcing a timeout by Holton. Lady Eagle seniors Jaiden Wise, Paige Heiman and Paige Winsor had huge kills during the decisive run.

Holton had to take its final timeout when Silver Lake extended the lead to 21-17. The Lady Wildcats battled back with three straight points, trimming the Eagle lead to 21-20, leading to the first timeout by Silver Lake.

After Holton tied the set at 21, Silver Lake scored four straight, behind the outstanding hitting of sophomore Karys Deiter, closing out the first set, 25-21.

Set two began with Holton jumping out to a 4-1 lead, but two blocks by Heiman cut the Wildcat lead to 4-3. Holton took their first timeout of the second set when Silver Lake tied the score at 8.

A kill and block by Winsor put the Lady Eagles up 11-9, but the Lady Wildcats came back to tie the set at 12. Silver Lake then ran off four straight points, taking a 16-12 lead, causing Holton to take their final timeout.

Wise had a huge solo block, then a kill to give Silver Lake a 20-14 lead. The teams traded points and Silver Lake won the championship on a kill by Winsor, 25-21, 25-19, giving the Eagles their first championship since 2018.

It couldn't have been any closer.

Washburn Rural, top-ranked in the 6A coaches rankings, didn't have an individual medalist (top 20) on Saturday, but the Junior Blues put four runners in the top 28 places to lead the way as Rural captured the team championship by a single point (100-101) over Blue Valley.

Swedlund said at mid-week that he expected a tight race for the title.

"Basically the top five in the rankings are all just points from each other,'' Swedlund told TopSports.news. "There are several teams that have an opportunity (to win the team crown), so you've got to take it.

"We're not taking anything for granted and if you want to end up on the podium (top three teams) you're going to have to run well. We've been fortunate to have some good teams that were in the conversation and when you put yourself in the conversation there is no reason not to make your goal the absolute top. You want to be the best, you want to win, so that's what you shoot for.''

The Junior Blues, who had tied Manhattan at regionals and finished second on a tiebreaker, rode a pack finish on Saturday to its second title under Swedlund, a Washburn Rural alum.

Olathe West was just 10 points behind Blue Valley in third (110) while Maize (147) and Free State (150) rounded out the top five in the team standings.

Blue Valley Northwest's Jacob D'souza won the individual title in 15:42.50.

Washburn Rural's girls finished seventh as a team with 173 points, led by freshman Alyson Hinck in a time of 19:54.78.

Seniors Emily Graf and Kenzie Maddox and sophomore Reese Beardslee return from last year's runnerup Rural team and will be joined on Saturday by freshmen Alyson Hinck, Morgan Munson, Clara Dillon and Lilly Palmer.

Graf led Rural with a fifth-place finish at regionals while Hinck was eighth, Munson ninth, Maddox 16th, Beardslee 17th, Dillon 21st and Palmer 36th.

"You've got some young girls, so you just want them to get out there and run the best that they can and see where you land,'' Swedlund said.

Graf will be shooting for her third 6A state medal, finishing 14th a year ago after a 19th-place showing as a sophomore.

Topeka High sophomore Easton Davis posted a 14th-place regional finish to qualify as an individual for the 6A boys race.

  • State volleyball: Silver Lake looking to cap dream season with Class 3A state title

    Rick Peterson

    By RICK PETERSON

    TopSports.news

Veteran Silver Lake volleyball coach Sarah Johnson expected her team to be good this fall, but she is quick to admit that she never really expected the 41-1 record that the Eagles will take into this week's Class 3A state tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Now the aim for top-seeded Silver Lake is to finish off its dream season with the school's 10th state title and first since 2018.

"I honestly wasn't expecting this record at this point in the season, however, I did have very high hopes for this squad,'' Johnson said. "My first feeling of, 'this team has the potential to go far,' was this summer at the Mokan volleyball tournament at Washburn University.

"We came out first at that tourney with some tough competition. There is just something special about them. They are all bought in, willing to give their all, okay with being held accountable, and have a love and respect for one another cheering the other one on.''

Silver Lake's only loss came against 5A sub-state finalist Shawnee Heights in its 10th match of the season and the Eagles have reeled off 32 straight wins entering 3A pool play Thursday.

"Leadership and unity is definitely part of it,'' Johnson said of the Eagles' success.  "A good sign of leadership is the ability to listen. I feel that they are all open to each other's ideas and feedback. They take it and learn from it. A big thing I've seen with this group leading to the success they've had thus far is the ability to not get rattled.

"We talk about getting uncomfortable in practices so when we are faced with uncomfortable situations in matches, it's familiar and we are comfortable. They have that calm confidence that helps them in those tough situations.''

Johnson knows that the Eagles are likely to encounter some of those tough situations in a 3A field that includes five teams with at least 33 wins and all eight with at least 26.

But the Silver Lake coach knows her team is extrememly capable of answering the challenge.

"Yes, this weekend will be tough,'' Johnson said. "Our goal is to keep at it like we have all year -- limit our own errors, not let a team go on runs and adjust to different players/teams quickly and efficiently without getting rattled.

"(We want to) continue rising to the occasion and competing at a high level physically and mentally.''

In the brand new state tournament format installed by the Kansas State High School Activities Association, the 3A field will play its three pool matches on Thursday before a day off on Friday and the semifinals, championship and third-place matches on Saturday.

Washburn Rural takes aim on ninth Class 6A state crown

Eight-time Class 6A state champion Washburn Rural will be looking for title No. 9 this weekend in its ninth straight state appearance.

The 30-7 Junior Blues earned the No. 4 seed for Friday and Saturday's 6A event at Tony's Pizza Event Center in Salina with a 30-7 record.

Six of Rural's seven losses have come against state tournament teams in 6A, 5A and 4A, while the seventh defeat came at the hands of a Gardner-Edgerton team that played in a 6A sub-state final.

And now Washburn Rural coach Kevin Bordewick, who has led the Junior Blues to all eight of their state titles and ranks No. 2 on Kansas' all-time wins list, is hoping his team can step up its game even more this weekend.

"It's all about raising your level of play and your level of intensity, your mental toughness, and all those factors go into it,'' Bordewick said. "But we still have to be us. We can't be somebody we're not.

"The greatest teams make the routine plays more often than just making great plays and if we can just make routine plays more often than the other team we should be alright.''

The Junior Blues will open Pool I play in Friday's first match of the day at 10 a.m., facing No. 5 seed Olathe West (26-7), and Bordewick said he wants all of his team's focus to be on that match against an Owls team that defeated Rural 15-25, 25-19, 25-22 early in the season.

"We're just worried about Olathe West,'' he said. "We haven't really talked about any other teams yet. We did not feel like we played well against them, but they had a lot to do with that, too, when we played them way back in early Sept.

"I think overall, when you put everything together, we've come a really long way. We expect a lot out of ourselves and we have standards that people strive to get to and I think they've done that. They've continued what we've had for several years really, really well. I'm pretty proud of all of them.''

After a match break after facing Olathe West, Washburn Rural will face No. 8 seed Free State (20-12) at 12 p.m. before closing out pool play at 3 p.m. against top seed and two-time defending state champ Mill Valley (31-4).

On the other side of the 6A bracket are No. 2 seed Blue Valley West (30-4), No. 3 Wichita Northwest (30-6), No. 6 Manhattan (27-8) and No. 7 Olathe Northwest (28-9).

  • Dylan Willingham closing in on Rural soccer single-season, career scoring records

    Todd Fertig

    By TODD FERTIG

    TopSports.news

With three state championships, 16 semifinal appearances and 23 quarterfinal appearances, including 18 of the last 20 seasons, the Washburn Rural boys soccer program is one of the most successful in all of Kansas.

Year after year, it produces some of the best players in the state. Holding any type of record in such a program is quite an accomplishment.

Senior Dylan Willingham is on the verge of establishing himself as the program’s all-time greatest scorer. The next time Willingham puts a shot in the net, he will tie the school record for goals scored at 57. And he needs four goals to tie the mark for scores in a single season.

The Junior Blues have two more games left on the regular season schedule – at Topeka High on Monday, and at Blue Valley North on Thursday – and figure to play several postseason matches after that. The chances are high that Willingham will eclipse both records before he’s done.

“He’s one of the most talented kids to ever come through our program,” said Washburn Rural coach Brian Hensyel. “He has an unbelievable work ethic, wants to get better, super competitive.

“To get these records, he’s going to be up there with some of the great kids that we’ve had. It’s just cool to see a great kid like him, a really good student, be the person who could potentially hold those records.”

Last year’s Centennial League Player of the Year and an All-State first-team selection, Willingham now stands among the best goal scorers around. But it’s been a slow, steady build to this point. He scored just three goals as a freshman despite being a starter. He scored 12 as a sophomore, then 15 as a junior. He has scored 26 times thus far as a senior.

“When he was a freshman, I wouldn’t have thought of him as a goal scorer,” Hensyel said. “He played midfield for a couple of years. Now he’s playing forward. He was just a really good technical soccer player who has turned into a really good finisher.”

Willingham is excelling at scoring, but he doesn’t necessarily think of himself as a scorer.

“I was playing center-mid (my first two years) and I like to be more of a playmaker,” Willingham said. “But scoring goals is a fun thing to do. That’s the role that this team needs for me now, to play forward.”

Hardly a ball hog, Willingham also ranks high on the school list for assists.

“I think I play better as a whole when I just think about having us as a team winning, scoring goals as a team,” Willingham said. “In reality, it doesn’t matter who scores the goal. It just matters that the ball goes in the net.”

Hensyel said Willingham’s personality has helped him reach this point as a player.

“Sometimes when he was younger, he was a little bit tough on himself, if he made a mistake or missed a shot or whatever,” Hensyel said. “But it’s been pretty rare for me to see a team rally around one guy as much as I’ve seen them rally around him. His biggest fans are his teammates. They’re like, ‘We’ve got to get the ball to Dylan! We need to keep feeding him!’ ”

Willingham is chasing the season goals record of 30 set by Austin Halsey in 2014. He needs just one goal to match the career total of 57 held by Halsey and Easton Bradstreet.

“To reach those kind of totals, it means, number one, you’ve got to probably be on the team for four years. And then you’ve got to play a big role for four years,” Hensyel said.

After all, Emporia Municipal was Eckert's home course growing up and through her first three years of high school golf  before her family moved to Topeka prior to this school year after her junior year at Emporia High.

Now Eckert, who was a three-time 5A state medalist for the Spartans, is hoping to use her vast knowledge of the tournament layout to cap her high school career with a run at the state title.

"I'm so glad that state's at Emporia this year,'' Eckert said. "I know where the ins and outs are of the course for sure. But you can't get too comfortable with any course.

"I've played this course a bunch, but you know there's still new spots you haven't seen that you'll find eventually and you've just got to play that day.''

Eckert followed up her city and United Kansas Conference individual championships with a second-place regional finish last Monday at Shawnee County Club as the Vikings advanced to state as a team with a runnerup finish behind Andover (342-355).

Eckert carded a two-over-par 75 at regionals to finish second behind Regan Dusenbery's two-under 71 while Seaman also got a fourth-place finish from Makenna Stuke (90), a tie for seventh from Kaitlynn Frye (94), a 10th-place finish from Chloe Schmidtlein (96) and a 16th from Molina Quintana (110).

Eckert feels like her game is in pretty good shape entering her final high school state tournament.

"I feel like if I can keep up with what I've been doing right now I think I'll be in pretty good shape for state,'' Eckert said.

Topeka West senior Berlyn Kolean qualified for state as an individual with a 109 while Shawnee Heights junior Lauryn Valdivia qualified for state as an individual with a 112.

State tournaments at all sites are scheduled to get under way at 9 a.m. on Monday and 10 a.m. on Tuesday after the fields are cut to the top six teams and top individuals.

Rural, which has captured four 6A state titles, posted a four-person score of 335 to finish second behind champion Olathe West (328).

Junior Kailyn Petersen led the Junior Blues with a third-place regional finish, shooting a 79, while Taryn Jellison placd fourth with an 83.

The Junior Blues also got a tie for fifth from Lauren Cox (85), an 11th-place finish from Briley Miles (88), a tie for 14th from Peyton Merrick (92) and a 16th-place showing from Ella Taggart (93).

The ultimate goal is always to finish first, but Seaman girls tennis still had plenty to celebrate in Saturday's Class 5A state tournament at Kossover Tennis Center.

Andover ruled the day, sweeping the singles, doubles and team championships, but Seaman junior Emma Sweeney posted a runnerup singles finish to lead the way as the tournament-host Vikings finished second as a team, just six points behind the champion Trojans (39-33).

"A great weekend,'' Seaman coach Jamie Robinson said. "Of course that's why we wanted to host is we wanted to give an advantage to a team that we thought was going to be one of the best teams in the state, and we were. We proved it.''

And it was a day of breakthroughs for the Vikings, with Sweeney advancing to the title match after finishing fourth as a sophomore, while senior Molly Gorman finished sixth in singles after a 10th-place finish as a junior and the Viking doubles team of senior Peyton Henry and junior Camryn Lux finished seventh to cap their first season as a doubles team.

Sweeney, who captured her third straight 5A state medal, finished her season 30-2, with both losses coming against Andover senior Mia Jaramillo, who took a 6-4, 6-3 decision in Saturday's championship match.

Jaramillo, who beat Sweeney in the third-place match in 2024, jumped out to 3-0 and 5-2 leads in the first set before Sweeney rallied to within 5-4 and Jaramillo went up 5-1 in the second set before Sweeney cut her deficit to 5-3.

"We did the same thing in Olathe, so I was kind of expecting it, but I feel like I pushed through,'' Jaramillo said. "She's a great player, so she did good.

"I felt I had a lot of pressure, but we have a great team, so we all pushed through.''

While obviously upset with her near miss, Sweeney knows that someday soon she'll be proud of her accomplishment.

"I'll be pleased after a little bit,'' Sweeney said. "The goal after last year, and I was surprised I made it (to the semifinals), I made it my new goal to try and win, but it's okay and I'll come back next year even harder.

"This gives me more experience and it gives me the experience of playing in front of a big crowd in a big situation, so I think I'm just going to take what I learned today and it will help me grow and make me work even harder in the offseason.''

"Runnerup is so impressive,'' Robinson said of Sweeney's performance. "She's lost to one person this year and that was Mia, so credit to her. She came to play.

''Emma had a couple of runs, but it just wasn't quite enough, so hey, let's learn from it and grow from it.''

  • Silver Lake defense comes up big late in 28-21 win over previously-unbeaten Indians

Silver Lake is known as a team that throws the ball all over the yard, putting up points in flashy style. But when a game with immense playoff implications was on the line, the Eagle defense was the star. The Eagles turned back an Osage City drive to win 28-21 Friday at CJ Hamilton Field.

Osage City took possession of the ball with 7:17 remining, trailing by one score. The Indians mounted an 11-play drive that chewed up nearly six minutes. With 1:20 remaining in the game, the Indians faced fourth and two at the Eagle seven-yard line.

Reed Silver, the Indians’ quarterback, had already carried eight times on the drive. He crashed over the right tackle on his ninth carry and was stopped cold by junior Myles Fisher and sophomore Dom Monhollon, effectively ending the contest.

“We figured they would try to run it outside because they got us on a few plays before,” said senior Grady Bergmann. “Our D-line made a great play, our linebackers made a great play, and our safety came up and tackled him. It was a great play all around.”

“People think we’re an offensive school, but to go out in the red zone and stop them…(Osage City is) a good team, they’re big. So proud of those kids,” said Silver Lake coach Logan Pegram “We got up 14 and it kind of got the momentum back on their side. To see our kids respond with the goal-line stop was something that, as a coach that’s focused on offense, it was awesome to see.”

Bergmann was the star of the first half, hauling in two touchdown passes and intercepting a pass to squelch an Osage City drive.

“Last year, (Osage City) beat us down there, and with them coming up here, we felt like we had to make a statement against an undefeated team, and we did that tonight on Senior Night,” Bergmann said.

Bergmann’s two first half-touchdowns were matched by the Indians, sending the teams to halftime tied, 14-14. Silver Lake grabbed the lead early in the third period on a long pass from Kip Kruger to Owen Rottinghaus. The Eagles then went up 28-14 late in the third period on a 31-yard dash by Monhollon.

Osage City quickly took back the momentum, however. A long catch-and-run by the Indians cut the lead to 28-21 early in the fourth period. Silver Lake was unable to respond, leaving plenty of time for Osage City to finish the comeback. Only the heroic stop on fourth down saved the Eagles.

Monhollon provided 152 yards rushing on just eight carries. Rottinghaus exploded for long receptions of 78 and 42. Bergmann and Dayne Johnson produced 58 and 52 yards receiving from quarterback Kruger, who completed 18 of 22 throws for 200 yards.

Silver, one of the Indians’ leading receivers this season, was forced to step into the quarterback position in place of injured starter Kasen Parsons. Silver passed for 183 yards and rushed for 84 yards. The Indians put the ball in his hands when the game was on the line.

“We looked him up and saw (Silver) was going to have to play (quarterback) and I was very impressed,” Pegram said. “He’s a heck of an athlete. He’s a junior so we’ll get to play him again next year in district.”

For this year, Silver Lake is now in command of Class 2A District 3.

“It gives us the driver’s seat without knowing what happened around the state,” Pegram said. “We don’t measure success by district championships, but it’s always nice when you’re the one seed and you get to hopefully keep playing at home.”

With a pair of dominating victories Friday at Kossover Tennis Center, Seaman junior Emma Sweeney, the No. 2 seed, assured herself of a top-four Class 5A state singles finish for the second straight season.

But after finishing fourth as a sophomore, the Seaman star has her sights on bigger things Saturday.

"Last year I wasn't really expected to make it, so I didn't really know what was going on and not winning my semifinal match, it was OK and it was a learning moment,'' Sweeney said. "But this year I'm really looking forward to taking that step and competing and trying to make it to the championship.''

Now 29-1 on the season, Sweeney dropped just one game on Friday, posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over St. James Academy's Jenna Peltzer and a 6-1, 6-0 quarterfinal victory over Kapaun Mt. Carmel's Clara Hocker to advance to Saturday's 9 a.m. semifinal.

Sweeney said she felt relaxed for the most part during Friday's matches.

"I had a talk with my mental performance coach the other day and we talked about winning over my nerves and I think after I won them over it helps me play a lot more confident and loose,'' Sweeney said.

Sweeney will face No. 3 seed Allison Munhall of Valley Center in one semifinal while top seed Mia Jaramillo of Andover will face No. 5 seed Kali Keough of Emporia in the other semifinal.

Seaman senior singles player Molly Gorman and the Viking doubles team of senior Peyton Henry and junior Camryn Lux also assured themselves of state medals while advancing to Saturday's place matches.

Gorman, who lost 6-0, 6-2 to Jaramillo in the singles quarterfinals, can still finish as high as fifth, as can Henry and Lux, who also lost in the doubles quarterfinals.

Viking juniors Kaylyn Hiebsch and Cadence Speer were eliminated Friday, just one win away from advancing to the place rounds.

Seaman coach Jamie Robinson said he was pleased overall with the Vikings' first-day state performance as the team tries to earn a top-three state finish for the second straight season.

"We won the matches we were supposed to win,'' Robinson said. "So far, so good. It could have been a little better, it could have been a lot worse.''

Cair Paravel Latin junior Madilyn Poole, making her second straight Class 3A-1A state appearance, has assured herself of a top-four finish and her first state medal after advancing to Saturday's singles semifinals at the Salina Tennis Center.

Poole, the No. 3 seed, posted a 6-0, 6-1 win in her first match of the day before rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 6 seed Lauren Sleder of Larned in the quarterfinals.

Poole will face No. 2 seed Karli Haase of Ellsworth in a 9 a.m. semifinal Saturday.

Silver Lake junior Evelynn Thompson came within one win of advancing to Saturday's place matches.

And after earning a Class 5A state medal with an 11th-place singles finish as a freshman and turning in a strong fourth-place showing as a sophomore, Sweeney feels like she's in position to take another big step in Friday and Saturday's state meet at Kossover Tennis Center.

Sweeney has put together a banner 27-1 campaign so far with a sweep of city, United Kansas Conference and 5A regional titles and earned the No. 2 seed for this weekend's state event.

"I'm excited,'' Sweeney said. "I'm nervous, but nerves are good. I've been hitting really good, really loose and just hitting good shots.

"And then from a mental standpoint, I think my head's pretty clear, too.''

Seaman is coming off a sweep of city, United Kansas Conference and regional team championships and will be aiming for a second straight 5A team trophy after finishing third a year ago.

"I think we're aiming for third or above,'' Sweeney said. "We got it last year so, I think that's what we're looking for this year, and we've all made it (to state), so if we are all able to make it to the second day and place I think we're putting ourself in a good position.''

Two-time regional champ Sweeney led the way last Saturday at Kossover as the Vikings edged St. James Academy for the regional crown.

Viking senior Molly Gorman finished second to Sweeney at regionals for the second straight season and will be shooting for her fourth straight state medal.

Gorman finished 10th in 5A singles last season after teaming with Katie Krumins to earn state medals in doubles as a freshman and sophomore.

Gorman is 24-6 on the season and has been installed as the eighth seed for state.

Seaman senior Peyton Henry and junior Camryn Lux finished third at regionals while Viking juniors Kaylyn Hiebsch and Cadence Speer finished fourth.

Henry and Lux are 25-5 on the season and the No. 6 seed for state while Hiebsch and Speer are 22-8 and seeded No. 13.

The 5A state tournament will start at 10:30 a.m. Friday and continue on Saturday with a 9 a.m. start.

The Ichabods, well aware of the fact that the Hornets had won 13 straight matches, including a sweep over a Missouri Western team that handed Washburn its only loss of the season, responded with one of their most complete performances of the season in a 25-22, 25-17, 25-17 sweep at White Auditorium.

"We played great, I thought we played really well,'' veteran Washburn coach Chris Herron said. "I thought we played with so much intensity and I would tell you this, their crowd being as loud and nasty as they were, helped us get to that intensity.

"I'm not thanking them, but I'm saying that they helped us get to that level of intensity. I'm really proud of my kids. I thought we played a solid game all the way around. We out-blocked them, out-hit them.''

Washburn improved to 15-1 overall and 4-1 in the MIAA while Emporia State fell to 13-3 and suffered its first loss in five conference matches.

"We had a nice plan, but I know they had a nice plan, too,'' Herron said. "Ours just was effective.''

"It felt really good,'' Washburn senior star Austin Broadie said. "(Herron) was encouraging us so he definitely thought we played good and it felt really good. I think everyone played really well.

"We came in knowing that they were undefeated in conference and they beat Mo. West so that was really important and we wanted to come out and play our best.''

Washburn never trailed in the opening set and there were just two ties, but Emporia State fought back from an 18-11 deficit to get within a point at 22-21 and 23-22 before the Ichabods closed out the win with back-to-back kills from Emery Keebaugh.

The Hornets took their first lead of the night at 2-1 in the second set, but Washburn steadily took control, taking a 16-9 advantage on a Broadie kill and going in front 19-12 on another Broadie kill.

Emporia State rallied to get as close as 19-16 on a kill from Brailee Bogle, but Washburn scored six of the final seven points to close out the win.

Standing on the sideline of the field named in his honor, where he guided the Eagles for 47 years, Hamilton was presented a plaque by KSHSAA executive director Bill Faflick and former executive director Gary Musselman.

“I’m deeply honored, primarily because I’m representing my former players who are loyal to our program, and the great assistant coaches, and a community that was committed and sacrificed for those kids,” Hamilton said. “There are a lot of great coaches (in the KSHSAA Hall of Fame) and to be put in the category with all those other great coaches is just a great honor. I’m happy to represent this community and this school in the hall of fame.”

Hamilton was one of five individuals selected for induction to the hall of fame last December. The Eagles took advantage of their first home game of the season to celebrate Hamilton’s induction, with a number of his former players, as well as family and friends, on hand.

“It is special for the Silver Lake community, where many former players are in attendance, to be able to be a part of CJ’s induction into the KSHSAA Hall of Fame,” said Silver Lake Athletic Director David Schooler. “Hosting this event on the field that he coached for so many years is extra special.”

Hamilton’s resume is unmatched. He retired in 2021 with a football coaching record of 447-98. No coach in Kansas history has approached the 400-win mark. He led the Eagles to 39 league titles and 18 appearances in the state championship game, winning eight – the most titles by any coach in Kansas history.

  • Silver Lake picks up 19-6 win over Kaws on night KSHSAA honors legendary coach

On a night when CJ Hamilton was honored by the Kansas State High School Activities Association for building Silver Lake into a football powerhouse, the Eagles picked up their first win of the season, defeating Perry-Lecompton 19-6 on the field named for the legendary coach.

CJHamilton2025HOF 1Legendary Silver Lake coach CJ Hamilton was welcomed into the KSHSAA Hall of Fame Friday by former KSHSAA executive director Gary Musselman (left) and current executive director Bill Faflick. [Photo by Todd Fertig/TSN]

Silver Lake spent all night in the red zone, while Perry-Lecompton ran just one play in their opponent’s territory all night. Yet the game remained in doubt until late in the fourth period because the Eagles just couldn’t deliver the knockout punch. The home team saw four drives end on fourth-and-goal situations at the 1, 9, 3 and 6-yard lines.

“I’ve got to be better in the red zone as a play caller, so that’s nothing on the kids,” said Silver Lake coach Logan Pegram. “There’s no reason we should be able to walk down the field and then get inside the red zone and not be able to move them. So that’s on the (offensive) line coach, and that’s me.”

The Silver Lake defense more than made up for the offense’s struggles in the first half. Defensive end Jayden Waterer was a one-man wrecking crew. The senior blocked a Kaw punt at midfield on the first drive of game, recovered the ball and returned it to the Perry-Lecompton 13-yard line. The Eagles took advantage of the short field to punch in a 2-yard touchdown run by Bryson Burgos.

Later in the first period, Waterer sacked the Kaw quarterback in the end zone for a safety.

On the ensuing possession, a long Silver Lake drive culminated with a Dayne Johnson touchdown on a jet sweep. The Eagles led 16-0 early in the second period and appeared on their way to a blowout.

The Kaws punted on their next possession, but were helped by Silver Lake penalties to continue the series at the Eagle 43-yard line. On the only play the Kaws ran in Eagle territory all game, quarterback Garrett Metcalfe connected with Kayden Baker on a bomb that gave the visitors their only score.

The Eagles did not reach the end zone again, but moved the ball freely up and down the field behind freshman quarterback Kip Kruger.

"My experience at Emporia State was pretty unique,'' Stolle said. "Some of the things that might surprise you is that every year all of us tried out for the team. There were two weeks and every year all of us tried out and you didn't know for sure if you were on the team or who else was on the team. We all walked on and we were all Kansas girls.

"Before every game we prayed together and we played hard. We worked together as a team and it was about the team and there's something wonderful about working with a group of people where you're working on behalf of the team.''

Head earned All-Class 4A honors in football, basketball and baseball at Hayden and played basketball and baseball at Washburn University before being signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cleveland Indians in 2006.

"Thanks to the Topeka Shawnee County Sports Hall of Fame,'' Head said. "I'm very honored and very humbled. I don't think people realize the amount of people that come out of here. Just right now we have a player in the big leagues (Ryan Zeferjahn), we have the SEC volleyball player of the year (Brooklyn DeLeye) and probably the greatest softball player in Topeka history (NiJaree Canady).''
