EASTON BROXTERMAN, Washburn Rural
A sophomore 113-pounder, Broxterman bounced back from a scary incident early in the match to win a Class 6A regional wrestling title with a 15-3 major decision over Junction City junior Eziekiel Witt in a rematch of the 2022 state 106-pound state title match, won by Witt. With Saturday's regional victory, Broxterman improved 45-3 on the season while posting his first win over Witt.
NICK FREELAND, Shawnee Heights
Freeland, a senior, won the 150-pound championship in Saturday's Class 5A regional wrestling tournament at Blue Valley Southwest, improving to 38-7 on the season. Freeland won his regional championship with a 3-2 overtime decision over Spring Hill senior Miles Bell.
BARRETT LIETZ, Rossville
Lietz, a junior 215-pounder, captured a Class 3A-1A regional wrestling championship Saturday at Sabetha, taking a 6-1 decision over Oskaloosa sophomore Colsen Perry in the title match. Also an All-Shawnee County pick in football, Lietz will take a 32-8 record into this Friday and Saturday 3A-1A state meet at Hays.
JACK MIRANDA, Washburn Rural
Miranda capped an outstanding junior season in Saturday's Class 6A state swimming championships at Shawnee Mission, winning three state medals, including a pair of third-place individual finishes. Miranda posted a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestule in 1 minute, 45.71 seconds and was third in the 500 free in 4:55.31. Miranda also swam on the Junior Blues' seventh-place 400 free relay (3:22.37).
LUKE PERKINS, Shawnee Heights
Perkins, a senior, captured four gold medals in Saturday's Class 5A-1A state swimming championships at Shawnee Mission, giving him 12 state medals for his high school career, including four medals in each of his final two high school seasons. Perkins finished third in the 100-yard butterfly (52.45 seconds) and fourth in the 200 individual medley (1:59.14) and swam on the T-Birds' fourth-place 200 medley relay (1:40.48) and sixth-place 200 free relay (1:31.53).
JAELINN THETFORD, Seaman
A junior, Thetford bowled a 616 three-game series to capture the girls individual championship in last Friday's United Kansas Conference championships in Olathe. Thetford bowled games of 213, 206 and 197, leading the Vikings to the team title by a 2,887-2,790 margin over Lansing. Thetford was a member of Seaman's Class 5A-1A state championship team in 2022, finishing 22nd individually.
