Playing for the first time in 15 days, the ninth-ranked (Class 6A) Washburn Rural girls showed very little rust in their return to the court Thursday, rolling to a 67-27 victory over Lawrence in the opening round of the Capital City Classic at Seaman.

The Junior Blues quickly put the game out of reach with a 23-6 first quarter as senior Zoe Canfield and sophomore Josie Carlgren both canned three 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes.
Washburn Rural opened up a commanding 35-12 halftime advantage and then hit the Lions with a 21-7 third quarter to force a running clock throughout the fourth quarter.
"Probably the first thing I'm going to hear is that we should take more days off during the season,'' Rural coach Kevin Bordewick cracked. "But I do think they didn't show very many signs of rust.
"There were times in our offense when we were a little stagnant but when you shoot that well from outside it makes everything else look very good.''
The Junior Blues hit 14 3-pointers in the game, including five treys apiece from Canfield and Carlgren.
Canfield led all scorers with 21 points while Carlgren added 15.
Freshman Brooklyn Rutherford added nine points, including a pair of 3-pointers, for the Junior Blues while junior Kate Hinck scored eight points and senior Destiny Ochs seven.
"We were within ourselves and we weren't trying to do too much extra too many times,'' Bordewick said. "I thought we were playing decent defense. I think there's some things we need to point out and get better at, but for the first game in 15 days, I can't argue with that.''
Cami Nauholz, a 6-foot-1 freshman, and senior Azura Clark both scored nine points to lead the Lions (5-5).
With Thursday's win Washburn Rural (7-2) advanced to a 6:30 p.m. semifinal on Friday night to face No. 2-ranked (6A) Wichita Heights, a 60-26 winner over Topeka High.
Lawrence will play a 3 p.m. consolation game on Friday against Topeka High.

SEAMAN 54, SHAWNEE MISSION WEST 17
Seaman coach Matt Tinsley didn't think his second-ranked (5A) Vikings were particularly sharp on the offensive end, especially in the early going.
But Tinsley also knows he really didn't have much to complain about after his 10-0 Vikings posted a 37-point first-round win over Shawnee Mission West while holding the Vikings to just 17 points in the 54-17 win.
"You're going to have nights where offensively you're not at your best,'' Tinsley said. "At times we just didn't look very crisp. We had a lot of passes we didn't catch, we missed a lot of bunnies we usually make, but defensively you've got to bring it every night and we brought it defensively.
"There's been a lot more emphasis in practice on rebounding and the first possession of the game we had four offensive rebounds, so they're buying into it. We've got to see some easy ones go in but I'm proud of the effort, no doubt, on defense.''
Seaman advanced to an 8:15 p.m. semifinal Friday to take on No. 9-ranked (6A) Wichita South, a 72-32 winner over Topeka West.
Seaman got off to somewhat of a slow start against SM West, leading 12-6 at the end of the opening quarter, but the Vikings outscored West 42-11 the rest of the way.

Junior Anna Becker scored a game-high 14 points to lead Seaman while sophomore Maddie Gragg added 12 points and three other Vikings scored at least six points.
Senior Izzy Joyce led SM West (3-7) with 7 points.
SM West will play a 4:45 p.m. consolation game on Friday against Topeka West, a 72-32 first-round loser to Wichita South.

WICHITA HEIGHTS 60, TOPEKA HIGH 26
Topeka High got off to a solid start Thursday, but Wichita Heights quickly gained control on the way to a 60-26 victory over the Trojans.
Wichita Heights, ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, improved to 11-0 on the season, advancing to a 6:30 p.m. Friday semifinal to face No. 9 Washburn Rural.
The Falcons got hot at the end of the opening quarter to take a 22-8 lead and pushed their advantage to 36-14 at the half.
Heights led 46-22 after three quarters and forced a running clock midway through the fourth stanza.
Senior Kya Mayberry and junior Samiyah Ellis scored 11 points apiece to lead the Falcons.
Freshman Ahsieyrhuajh Rayton led all scorers with 15 points.
Topeka High, now 2-8, will play a 3 p.m. consolation game on Friday against Lawrence, a 67-27 first-round loser to Washburn Rural.

Topeka West appeared as if it might be on the way to an upset victory at the start of Thursday night's first-round game against Wichita South, 10th-ranked in Class 6A.

But after jumping out to a 9-0 lead and taking a 13-13 tie into the second quarter, the Chargers' upset bid fell flat, with Wichita South (9-2) taking control with a 24-12 second quarter and holding West to just seven points in the second en route to a 72-32 win.
With Thursday's win South advanced to Friday's 8:15 p.m. semifinal to face undefeated and second-ranked (5A) Seaman.
Topeka West (4-6) was still within 12 points (37-25) at the half but Wichita South rode a 20-4 third quarter to a 57-29 advantage and forced a running clock early in the fourth stanza.
The Titans turned the game into a rout with their 3-point shooting, connecting on 11 3s on the night.
Senior Zion Butler led all scorers with 18 points, including three 3-pointers, while junior Mahogany Butler and senior N'ascent Robinson had 14 points apiece and freshman Chloe Hartzler 11. M. Butler had four 3-pointers on the night.
Sophomore Imani McGlory and senior Zoe Clark scored 10 points apiece for Topeka West.
The Chargers will play at 4:45 p.m. Friday against Shawnee Mission West, a 54-17 first-round loser to Seaman.
