Both Emporia State and the No. 7 Washburn Ichabods singed the nets in the first half of Saturday's MIAA men's basketball game at White Auditorium, with the two teams deadlocked 43-43 at the half.
The 10-2 Ichabods cooled off in the second half, however, while the Hornets never did, with Emporia State pulling away for a 91-74 victory.
Emporia State, which improved to 7-6 on the season, shot 59.3 percent from the field in the first half and heated up to 66.7 percent in the second half to shoot 62.7 percent for the game. The Hornets also hit 13 of 21 3-pointers (61.9 percent).
Washburn shot 53.9 percent in the first half but shot just 29.4 percent after the break, finishing the game at 40 percent. The Ichabods were 15 of 40 from 3-point range.
The Hornets opened the second half with a 10-0 run in the first four minutes to take a 53-43 lead over the Ichabods.
Washburn clawed to within a point (62-61) on a 3-pointer by Tyler Geiman at the 11:44 mark but Emporia State used two 10-0 runs and a 14-0 run in the second half to lengthen its lead down the stretch.
Jumah'Ri Turner led the Hornets with 27 points, while also recording 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Dallas Bailey added 17 points and had 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
Geiman led Washburn with 24 points and 8 assists while sophomore Tyler Nelson added 17 points, redshirt freshman Levi Braun 14 points and sophomore Connor Deffebaugh 10.
Geiman had 5 3-pointers and Braun 4 treys for the Ichabods.
EMPORIA STATE WOMEN 65, WASHBURN 55
The Ichabods held a 2-point lead over the Lady Hornets after the first quarter, but the offense went cold in the second quarter and Washburn couldn't recover as WU fell at Emporia State, 64-55, Saturday at White Auditorium.
The Lady Hornets improved to 8-2 while the Ichabods fell to 5-6.
A highlight of the day for Washburn was senior Hunter Bentley joining the Ichabods' 1,000-point club in the fourth quarter. Bentley became the 24th player in Washburn women's program history to achieve that honor.
Washburn led 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, but Emporia State scored the first 12 points of the second quarter while holding the Ichabods scoreless until the 4:02 mark of the quarter.
The Lady Hornets ended the half on an 8-0 run to open up a 29-17 halftime advantage.
Washburn put together an 11-0 run to get within 7 points (59-52) with 3:14 remaining, but could get no closer.
Tre'Zure Jobe played all 40 minutes and finished with 21 points and 6 rebounds.
Bentley led Washburn with 13 points, all in the second half, and added 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Sophomore Abby Oliver was 5 of 8 from the field and finished with 12 points while freshman Mackenzie Gamble set career-highs with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
The Lady Hornets were led by redshirt freshman Tre'Zure Jobe, who played all 40 minutes and finished with 21 points and 6 boards.
The Ichabods will return to action Thursday night in Wichita at Newman.
