It's been a tough fall for the Washburn University football team, with the Ichabods 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the MIAA.

But the Ichabods figure to be fired up when they make the short trip to Emporia Saturday to face longtime rival Emporia State for the 119th time in a 1 p.m. MIAA contest at Welch Stadium.
"That's what's cool about college football because rivalry weeks matter and if the team's not having a good year it helps to give them something to fight for,'' Washburn coach Craig Schurig said. "It's a big deal.''
Washburn is coming off a 61-21 MIAA loss to Missouri Western while Emporia State is 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA after the Hornets' comeback at No. 3-ranked Pittsburg State came up short in a 33-25 loss.
The Washburn-Emporia State series is the second-most played series in NCAA Division II history. The Hornets lead the all-time series 59-53-6, winning the last two meetings and 10 of the last 12 after the Ichabods had won 10 of 11 meetings between 2002 and 2011, including a streak of eight in a row between 2004 and 2011.
Schurig said despite the Ichabods' problems this fall, including a rash of early-season injuries, he has been proud of his team's work ethic and attitude.
"Our practices are good,'' Schurig said. "They go at it in practice and we play sections of the game like we practice and then something goes south and we fall off a cliff for minutes and then we try to battle back. But the kids have been good.
"Their attitude's been good and they compete in practice.''

The No. 23 nationally-ranked Washburn University soccer team returns to Yager Stadium this weekend, hosting Missouri Southern at 6 p.m. on Friday and No. 8-ranked Central Missouri at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Washburn is 10-1-1 in the 2023 season, needing just one victory to equal its 2022 win total in an 11-6-2 campaign.

WU is currently tied for first in the MIAA through five conference matches with Central Missouri and Fort Hays State.
Washburn set a program record with nine straight wins and has currently not lost in 10 matches, the most for the program since 2006.
Washburn went on the road last week for the first time in conference play and posted a 1-0 win over Missouri Western and a 1-1 tie with Northwest Missouri.
WU senior goalkeeper Raegan Wells started both games last weekend, playing all 180 minutes and making seven total saves.

The No. 20 nationally-ranked Washburn University volleyball team (13-4 overall, 7-3 MIAA) secured a Pink Out match sweep on Thursday night in Lee Arena, grounding the Jets of Newman (0-17, 0-9) in a 3-0 sweep.

Washburn won each set by at least 10 points beginning with a 25-10 first set victory. The Ichabods took a 25-12 win in the second and closed out the match with a 25-15 decision in the third set.
The Ichabods started the match with an ace from Corinna McMullen, which began a 7-0 start to the match.
Iyannah Jackson knocked down a kill shortly after completing a 5-0 burst for Washburn which pushed the lead into double digits at 12-2.
The Jets got four straight points to pull within five but never got closer.
Sophia Cavanaugh came off the bench to become the seventh Ichabod to record a kill in the set and ended it at 25-10.

Highland Park football picked up a much-needed victory Thursday night, ending a two-game skid and improving its playoff prospects with a 36-0 non-league win over Kansas City-Northeast, Mo. at Hummer Sports Park.

The visiting Vikings gave the Scots trouble in a sloppy first half, but senior Amari Taylor’s two long scoring receptions gave Highland Park a 16-0 cushion at the break.
“They were sitting on our offense for a little bit, but we just had to make a couple of adjustments,” Taylor said. “We had some new plays we put in and I got great blocks by the team to take it home.”
The Scots cleaned up their sputtering offense in the second half and built enough of a lead to trigger a running clock in the final period.

It wasn't exactly ideal conditions for Thursday's United Kanas Conference cross country meet at the Shawnee North Community Center, with competitors having to deal with not only a tough course but a stiff wind.

But that was no problem for Shawnee Heights senior boys star Jackson Esquibel, who won his first UKC title by 42 seconds after finishing second in the conference meet as a junior.
Esquibel clocked a five-kilometer time of 15 minutes, 40.0 seconds while Seaman sophomore Brody Anderson finished second in 16:22.0.
"It's a little challenging, especially with the wind today,'' Esquibel said. "That was a little difficult, but I told myself to enjoy it, smile through the pain and push on the parts that are the most difficult.
"Going into regionals and running this course next week I really wanted to get the small details down so next week I can just feel comfortable out here.''
