HOLTON – Hayden's noble 2022 campaign ended in a 48-17 loss to its district rival, Holton, in Friday night's Class 3A sub-state matchup.
Holton, which handed Hayden both of its losses in a 10-2 campaign, spoiled Hayden's hopes of reaching next Saturday's Class 3A state championship game at Hutchinson..

What separated Holton and Hayden in both of Holton's wins was its effectiveness on the ground. Holton capitalized whenever it cued up a speed option to the outside or had any open space.
"Holton is a good team, and they did a good job running the ball," Hayden coach Bill Arnold said. "They made some good adjustments, and we couldn't tackle in the open field very well. We had guys close to position out there on the outside on the option, but you have to be able to make a tackle, and we didn't get that done."
"I'm proud of our kids, I thought they competed hard."
Hayden play an impressive first half, taking a 17-14 lead to the locker room, but was shell-shocked by Holton in the second half.
On the game's first play, Hayden sophomore quarterback Jett Wahlmeier connected with junior Finn Dunshee on a 70-yard pass that went all the way for a Hayden touchdown. Hayden had a ton of momentum only 16 seconds into the game.
After Holton scored immediately after Dunshee's receiving touchdown, Hayden put together a stellar drive resulting in points. It was a 12-play, 55-yard, 8:23 drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Braydn Rose late in the first quarter.

Washburn University's women's basketball team took the lead with a third-quarter rally and held on late to begin the Washburn Classic with a 65-63 win over Southern Nazarene University Friday night at Lee Arena.

Junior point guard Aubree Dewey powered 2-1 Washburn with a career-high 20 points while freshman Natalia Figueroa had a career-high 14 points. Mackenzie Gamble and Emma Chapman added 10 points apiece and Chapman also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
In a close game that saw neither team lead by more than eight points, Nazarene (1-3) had the final possession with a chance to force overtime or pull out the win with a 3-pointer, but the Crimson Storm were unable to get a good shot and the Ichabods celebrated the victory.
"I'm being truthful when I say this, no matter how that game ended up I would have been really, really proud of my team tonight, just for how they showed up, how they stayed together and went through some tough stretches but they continued to be sharp and they continued to execute and it paid off for them,'' Washburn coach Lora Westling said. "They earned that win.''
Wasburn was coming off a two-point loss to Oklahoma Baptist last Saturday and Dewey said it was important for the Ichabods to bounce back.
"It was so important,'' Dewey said. "Being 1-1, we really didn't want to be 1-2. I don't know a single person on this team that wants to lose and I don't know a single person on this team that doesn't want to give every single thing possible to win and that showed all week.''
Offense came easy for both teams in the first quarter of a fast-paced game.

WAYNE, Neb. – The No. 15 nationally-ranked and No. 6-seeded Washburn volleyball team won the opening set of the NCAA Central Region quarterfinal match, but was unable to stop a strong offensive attack by No. 6 Minnesota Duluth and lost in four sets on Friday afternoon.

The Ichabods finished the season with a record of 24-8 and as MIAA Tournament champions.
Washburn lost by the set scores of 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, and 19-25.
The Bulldogs improved their record to 26-4 and move on to the regional semifinal against No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday.
In the opening set, Jalyn Stevenson broke an early 4-all tie with a kill that started a 5-1 run to give the Ichabods an 8-4 lead.
During that run, the sophomore outside had three kills and an ace. Washburn held a 16-11 advantage when Minnesota Duluth rallied with six-consecutive points to jump in front by one for its first lead of the game.
Stevenson came through with her fifth kill of the set to level the score at 17 and followed that up with another service ace to put Washburn up, 18-17.

Nine Topeka boys soccer players have received All-State recognition from the Kansas High School Soccer Coaches Association, led by first-team selections Easton Bradstreet of Washburn Rural (Class 6A) and Jordan Garvin of Shawnee Heights (Class 5A).

Bradstreet, who led Rural to a fourth-place finish in the Class 6A state tournament, and Garvin, named the player of the year in the United Kansas Conference, are both senior forwards and both helped lead their teams to league championships in the Centennial League and UKC, respectively.
Washburn Rural senior defender Cayden Lee and junior forward Devon Rutschmann were both named to the All-6A second team while Topeka High senior forward Aidan Morrison and Wahburn Rural senior midfielder received honorable mention.
Shawnee Heights senior midfielder Isaac Wilson was a second-team all-state pick in 5A while T-Bird senior forward Jesus Cardona and junior forward Jack Martin received honorable mention.
For a player to receive all-state honors from the KHSSCA, their coach must be a member of the association.

The Hayden road warriors hit the road for the third straight week, heading north to face Holton in a Class 3A sub-state clash between two 10-1 teams.
The Hayden Wildcats will face the Holton Wildcats for the second time this fall, with Holton rolling to a 37-13 win at Holton in district play.

Since then Hayden has reeled off four straight victories, including a 39-19 win at Columbus last Friday.
Junior Finn Dunshee rushed for 195 yards on just 13 attempts against Columbus and scored two touchdowns while sophomore Jensen Schrickel also scored a pair of TDs, on a 29-yard pass reception from sophomore Jett Wahlmeier and a 35-yard interception return, and Schrickel also kicked a 28-yard field goal and four extra points.
Dunshee has now rushed for 1,027 yards on 77 carries while Schrickel has caught 30 passes for 648 yards and has scored 16 total TDs while kicking 29 extra points..
Wahlmeier has completed 75 of 111 pass attempts for 1,240 yards and 15 TDs.
