The Washburn Ichabod football team picked up its first win of the 2024 season in a 24-16 MIAA decision over Missouri Western Saturday in St. Joseph, Mo.
After the teams traded punts, the Ichabod defense forced a turnover on downs and the Ichabods (1-3 overall, 1-2 MIAA) took a 7-0 lead to cap a nine-play, 60-yard drive when quarterback Keller Hurla converted a 3rd-and-13 for a 23-yard run for the score.
Western (2-3, 2-3) would get on the board with 2:58 left in the opening half on a 52-yard field goal by Cody Watson, cutting Washburn's lead to 7-3.
Washburn came up empty on its next drive and the Griffons would march 84 yards in three plays to take a 10-7 lead with under a minute to play in the opening half.
Receiving the ball in the second half, the Ichabods went 69 yards in nine plays, capped by a Lucas Oitker 1-yard touchdown run to regain the lead at 14-10 with 10:14 to play in the third quarter.

Saturday was a long, but very productive day for the Seaman volleyball team.
The 21-1 Vikings, defending Class 5A state champion, dominated its Seaman Invitational with a perfect 6-0 record in the seven-school round-robin event while winning 12 straight sets and pushing their winning streak to 21 matches.
Seaman opened its day with a 25-14, 25-19 win over Lansing before taking a 25-22, 25-14 win over city rival Hayden, a 25-10, 25-15 victory over Bishop Carroll, a 25-19, 25-18 win over Spring Hill, a 25-16, 25-19 triumph over Bishop Miege and a 25-14, 25-17 win over Maize South.
"I feel really good about today,'' Seaman coach Tatiana Dowling said. "I think that there's a lot of talented teams here and the girls really stepped up and played together and it was awesome to see. It was a lot of fun.
"I think that they're really playing their best volleyball together. I think that they love each other, which is a huge deal, and they respect each other and they want to play well for each other. A lot of these girls have been on varsity since their freshman year, so to see them get to have this type of success at the end of their Seaman careers I think is really cool.''
Viking senior Maegan Mills was named the tournament most valuable player by virtue of receiving the most points in all-tournament balloting by opposing coaches while seniors Kinley Wilhelm, Campbell Chabot and Ava Esser received all-tournament honorable mention.
Hayden, the smallest school in the field, also had plenty to celebrate on Saturday, with the Wildcats finishing second in the tournament with a 5-1 record.
The Wildcats' lone loss came against champion Seaman and Hayden survived three three-set matches.
"Overall, I am so proud of our team because a lot of times in volleyball it's a game of momentum and we would call time out when we got down and say, 'Hey, it's heart right now and you either want it or you don't,' '' Hayden coach Corrinne McGreevy said. "And they would come out of that time out and they wanted it and they worked for it, they came together as a team and the momentum shifted and they just didn't give up on each other. It was awesome.''
Hayden, now 21-2 on the season, picked up its first win of the tournament over two-time defending 4A state champion Bishop Miege (25-22, 25-23) and the Wildcats also earned wins over Maize South (25-16, 25-18), Spring Hill (18-25, 25-21, 26-24), Lansing (25-27, 25-16, 27-25) and Bishop Carroll (17-25, 25-22, 25-14).
Hayden senior Reagan McGivern and freshman Hailey Schmidtlein were named to the all-tournament team and junior Ella Foster, senior Bella Reid and freshman Blakely Walter received honorable mention.

Washburn University volleyball opened MIAA conference play on Friday night in Maryville, Mo. with a tough 3-2 loss on the road to Northwest Missouri State in a match that lasted more than 150 minutes.
The Ichabods finish out their road trip against Missouri Western on Saturday at 6 p.m.
After taking the first set 25-18, Washburn (9-2 overall, 0-1 MIAA) fell to the Bearcats (7-4, 1-0) in each of the next two sets, 28-26 and 25-19.
The Ichabods forced a fifth set with a 25-19 victory but came up short, falling 15-12 in the fifth set.
Both losses for Washburn this year have come in the fifth set.
Early on the Ichabods used a 6-0 run, sparked by a kill from Jalyn Stevenson to take an 8-2 lead.
A 4-0 burst shortly after made the score 13-6. Washburn registered 16 kills while hitting .273 in the set and down the stretch it was the offense that led the way with a kill by Austin Broadie and an ace from Corinna McMullen finishing out the first set.
The Ichabods went up 3-0 in the second set after a kill by Stevenson from McMullen.
Both offenses were rolling in the second set with both teams hitting over .300 in the frame with only five combined errors.
Within the first 18 points of the set there were seven ties. Washburn created some space with three kills from Brynne Topolski, Natalie Hedlund and Broadie to go up 16-13.
Northwest Missouri won three straight points to tie the set at 18. After the Ichabods had set point at 24-23 the Bearcats responded to tie it, and again after Washburn went up by one two more times. The third time began a 3-0 set-winning burst for Northwest Missouri.
The third set began much like the second, with six ties within the first 20 points of the set.
