The Shawnee Heights Thunderbirds dropped their home opener, 42-35, to Basehor-Linwood on Friday night at Wetter Field in a game that included multipe lead changes and high-powered offensive performances for both teams.
The visiting Bobcats wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, with Nate Martin taking the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.
The T-Birds would answer almost as quickly, with junior quarterback Aiden Scott finding classmate Tyren Parker for a 69-yard score on Shawnee Heights’ first play from scrimmage.
A few minutes later, the Bobcats would get a hand on a Thunderbird punt, setting up a short drive that would end with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Carson Dixon to Austin Adair to put the visitors back in front.
The Bobcat lead would only last about two minutes, when Shawnee Heights’ Sa’javeion Ward intercepted a Dixon screen pass and returned it 16 yards for a score. The defensive touchdown would give the Thunderbirds a 14-13 lead that they would take to the end of the first quarter.
The Bobcats nearly broke the game open in the second quarter, taking a 27-14 lead as Nick Doering found the end zone twice, courtesy of a 3-yard run and a 68-yard reception.
Basehor-Linwood had an opportunity to stretch the lead even further, but Cayden Lindsay snagged a tipped pass to force the second Shawnee Heights takeaway of the night.
Shawnee Heights would cut the Bobcat lead to six just before halftime after Scott found AJ Gallegos for a 10-yard touchdown.

Seaman (1-1, 1-0 United Kansas Conference) hosted Topeka West (0-2, 0-2 UKC) on Friday night in the third game of the season for both teams.
Topeka West played the game with two of their offensive linemen injured, so it proved to be difficult to get their running game going while Seaman started quickly and never looked back, winning by a score of 53-6.
After holding the Chargers to a three-and-out, Seaman scored on their second play from scrimmage -- a 53-yard pass from senior Max Huston to senior Bryer Finley.
Following a Topeka West fake punt, Seaman drove down the field and junior Kaden McKinney rushed 6 yards for a touchdown.
Topeka West’s third punt was fumbled and recovered by the Chargers on the Viking 30-yard-line. On the third play following the turnover, freshman Josiah Wilke connected with senior Elijah Berg on a 37-yard touchdown pass, making the score 14-6.
Early in the second quarter, the Vikings scored on an 18 yard pass from Huston to Finley, giving Seaman a 20-6 lead.
After the Chargers turned the ball over on downs, Huston connected with Finley for their third touchdown, a 65-yard pass down the right sideline.
Following a Topeka West turnover on downs, Seaman had a time-consuming drive, which ended in a 16 yard touchdown pass from Huston to sophomore Jack Becker, giving the Vikings a 34-6 lead.
A short punt by Topeka West gave Seaman a short field and the combination of Huston and Finley connected for the fourth time, extending the Vikings' lead to 40-6, which was the halftime score.
Due to approaching inclement weather, the second half was played with a running clock.
Seaman had the first possession of the third quarter and ran the ball three straight times, leading to a McKinney 17-yard touchdown run, making the score 46-6.
Seaman scored again following a Charger turnover on downs with a 26-yard run by senior Samson Tootle, increasing the lead to 53-6.
The game was cancelled due to lightning in the area with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, with Seaman improving their record to 2-1 while Topeka West fell to 0-3.
Huston had a terrific night for the Vikings, going 12 of 19 passing for 272 yards and five touchdowns. His favorite target, Finley, finished with six catches for 188 yards and four touchdowns.
The running game was also successful for Seaman as both running backs, McKinney and Tootle, carried the ball 10 times each, with McKinney gaining 86 yards and two touchdowns and Tootle rushing for 115 yards and one touchdown.

The Cair Paravel Lions endured a test of their character Friday night, matched in just their third game of 11-man football with the ninth-ranked team in Class 2A.
The Lions survived a similar test a week earlier, hanging with even higher-ranked Osage City. But Friday’s battle with Council Grove – Cair Paravel’s first home game as an 11-man team – ended in a 46-0 defeat at Washburn University’s Yager Stadium.
The Braves suited up 46 players Friday to just 18 for Cair Paravel. Facing a difference in size at essentially every position across the field, the Lions looked for positives to take away following the defeat.
“(Opponents like this) definitely show your weaknesses,” said Cair Paravel coach Doug Bonura. “I told the guys I’m proud of them. We didn’t quite play the game that we wanted to play. I don’t know if that’s because of (Council Grove) or because of us yet. That’s what film tells us. But I’m proud of the way they played.”
“But we’ve got to figure some things out, because it’s not going to be easy this year. Nothing’s easy.”
The Braves came out firing to start the contest. But after surrendering two quick touchdowns, the Lions’ defense stiffened. The highlight of the first half for the home team was holding Council Grove out of the end zone on three consecutive series.
When it appeared the Lions might make it to halftime trailing just 13-0, a long Braves’ pass put them in scoring position with less than two minutes remaining. Ace Monihen blasted in for a 2-yard touchdown.
After two plays on the ensuing drive, Monihen scooped up an errant pitch in the Lion backfield and dashed 29 yards for the Braves’ fourth touchdown of the half to lead 27-0.
With a few key players hobbled in the first half, the Lions scrambled to hold things together after halftime. A running clock brought on a speedy end to the 46-0 defeat.

There was little, if any, doubt that Hayden football was going to win Friday night's home non-league game against Kansas City-Bishop Ward ... and probably by a sizeable margin.
After all, Hayden had won its first two games by a 77-21 margin while Ward had lost its first two contests by a lopsided 95-7 count.
But veteran Hayden coach Bill Arnold wanted to make sure his team approached Friday's game as seriously as it would any other, a goal he felt the Wildcats accomplished in a 62-8 romp past the Cyclones.
"I wanted our kids to come out and execute,'' Arnold said. "I told the seniors before the game, 'Look, you're a third done with the regular season and you have limited opportunities, particularly to play here at home, in front of the home crowd.'
"We wanted to come out and we wanted to execute right off the bat and our kids did come out and compete early and we executed pretty good offensively I thought and defensively we got some pressure on them.''
Hayden scored all eight times it got its hands on the ball in the first half en route to a 56-0 halftime advantage, scoring on offense, defense and special teams and forcing a running clock throughout the second half.
