Senior libero Faith Rottinghaus tied Washburn University's single-match dig record and three Ichabods finished with double-digit kills as No. 1 Washburn volleyball won another top-10 battle on Saturday with a four-set victory at No. 7 Central Missouri.
Washburn defeated the Jennies, 25-14, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23, improving to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA.

Rottinghaus, a former Shawnee Heights state champ, dominated defensively as her 51 digs tied the program's single-match record, which another Heights grad, Erica Cowhick, set in 2006 in a five-set match at Pittsburg State.
Rottinghaus is now the record-holder for the most digs in a four-set match, finishing with seven more than Cowhick did in 2006 against Northwest Missouri.
With the score knotted up at three to start the match, Washburn went in front on a service error by Central Missouri (10-2, 3-1) and led for the remainder of the opening set. The Ichabods won six of the final eight points as they cruised to an 11-point victory.
The Jennies jumped out to an 10-3 advantage in the second set, thanks to a 7-0 scoring run. Genna Berg put an end to the run with a kill and the Ichabods started to chip away at the deficit, winning five of the next seven points to pull within four at 12-8.
UCM responded with another mini-run to create some space at 16-9. Washburn continued to fight and got within three points at 17-14 and then at 22-19, but were unable to complete the comeback as Central Missouri evened the match with its 25-19 win.
Allison Maxwell hammered down a kill to start the third set and Washburn quickly took a 4-1 lead. Central Missouri got within one at 6-5, but a 6-1 scoring run and then a 7-1 scoring run by the Ichabods pushed their lead to 22-12. Washburn held off a late 7-2 rally by the Jennies and won the set by six points on a Jennies service error.
The fourth set went back and forth early before the Ichabods went on a 4-1 run to go in front, 8-6.

After three heartbreaking losses, including two by a total of four points, Shawnee Heights' football team finally tasted victory Friday night, rolling to a 54-6 win over Kansas City-Schlagle.
Jarin Sanders powered the 1-3 T-Birds to the non-league victory, carrying the ball 15 times for 178 yards and scoring five touchdowns in a career night for the senior running back.

Shawnee Heights quarterback Callan Carver completed three of six passes for 45 yards and carried the ball 4 times for 34 yards and a touchdown.
Heighs' defense, meanwhile, turned in a dominating performance against the Stallions.
CAIR PARAVEL LATIN 50, SUNRISE CHRISTIAN 0 -- Cair Paravel Latin continued its outstanding start to the 2021 season, improving to 4-0 with a 50-0 road win over Sunrise Christian Academy in a rare Saturday contest.
The Lions put the game away with a 30-point first quarter and were in front 44-0 at the half.

Senior quarterback Carter Brian completed 10 of 19 passes for 99 yards and five touchdowns, including a pair of TD passes to senior Noah Hastert, who caught four passes for 43 yards.
Brian also rushed for 84 yards on seven attempts while junior Jachin Bonura carried the ball three times for 65 yards and two scores.
Sophomore Ian Brian was in on 11 tackles to lead the Lions' defense.
JUNCTION CITY 18, WASHBURN RURAL 17 (OT) -- Washburn Rural (3-1) suffered its first defeat of the season in heartbreaking fashion, with Xavion Felton scoring a two-point conversion to give the host Blue Jays (3-1) the overtime win.
The Junior Blues took a 10-7 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Junction City forced the overtime with an Aiden Fields field goal with eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Rural scored first in overtime, but the Blue Jays answered with a TD and Felton's conversion to pull out the victory.
EMPORIA 42, HIGHLAND PARK 32 -- Highland Park's losing streak reached 60 games Friday at Emporia, but for the second time in three weeks the Scots gave themselves a chance to win.
Highland Park rallied from an early 13-0 deficit to take an 18-13 lead over the Spartans, but Emporia rallied to take the lead for good at 35-32 with about three minutes left in the third quarter.

Hi Park junior Tre Richardson scored on a 99-yard kickoff return and rushing touchdowns of 8 and 11 yards.
Scot newcomer Tyrell Reed, a Topeka West transfer, scored on an 80-yard run.
MANHATTAN 49, TOPEKA HIGH 0 -- Manhattan improved to 4-0 on the season, riding a stifling defensive effort to a 49-0 Centennial League win Friday night at Hummer Sports Park.
The Indians built a 22-0 halftime advantage and put the Trojans away in the third quarter.
Topeka High fell to 1-3 on the season.
SILVER LAKE 54, OSKALOOSA 0 -- Silver Lake bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 54-0 romp past Oskaloosa Friday night in the Eagles' Class 2A district opener.
Silver Lake improved to 3-1 on the season, jumping in front 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and taking a 41-0 halftime advantage.

The offensive units for Washburn University and Missouri Western combined for 1,116 yards and 88 points Saturday at Yager Stadium.
But the Ichabod defense came up with just enough big plays to help Washburn outlast Western, 47-41.

Washburn allowed 584 total yards, including 448 passing yards and four touchdowns from Griffons quarterback Anthony Vespo, and the Ichabods trailed three times, but Brooks Peavler and Marquise Manning came up with big second-half interceptions to help turn the tide as WU improved to 3-1 overall and in the MIAA.
"They're a good team and they came out and threw the ball on us a little bit, but luckily our offense put up a lot of points for us and we got the stops when we needed to,'' said Peavler, a former Hayden standout.
With Washburn nursing a 41-34 lead late in the third quarter, Manning picked off Vespo at the Ichabod 17 and the Ichabods capitalized with an eight-play, 83-yard scoring drive, capped by a 5-yard Will Evans touchdown to put Washburn in front 47-34 with 11:21 remaining.

ROSSVILLE -- Torrey Horak’s four total touchdowns Friday night led Rossville to do what Rossville does best, win, with the Bulldawgs extending their winning streak to 17 games with a dominating 66-0 home Class 2A district win over McLouth.
Two of Horak’s touchdowns came in the first quarter, with the senior quarterback scoring on a 12 and 19-yard runs while breaking multiple tackles.

Horak broke off a 78-yard run for a touchdown in the second quarter and threw a 9-yard touchdown to Raphael Cooney to propel the Bulldawgs to a quick start out of the gate en route to a 52-0 halftime advantage.
“We played great as a team,'' Horak said. "Our older guys performed well and our younger guys got to get in the game. It was a lot of fun.”
The Dawgs’ offense, defense and special teams were in midseason form on Friday night.
“I thought we were focused and ready to go,'' Rossville coach Derick Hammes said. "After what I thought was a pretty intense game last week (44-20 over St. Marys), we came back this week ready to play football.”
Rossville overwhelmed McLouth, allowing the visitors a single yard of offense.
McLouth stuck with a “run-only” game plan and Rossville read it like a book. The defense didn’t force any turnovers but they didn’t need to with the plethora of three and outs they forced.
Rossville’s varsity starters played a total of two quarters in the contest which allowed guys like Camden Horak and Avery Crosswhite to touch the ball quite a bit in the second half.
The young players were able to put up two touchdowns against McLouth in quarters three and four, accounting for the final score.
Rossville (4-0) will host the Oskaloosa Bears at Rossville next Friday

There was little doubt that Hayden was going to win Friday night's Class 3A district football opener against numbers-strapped Baldwin.
After all, the Bulldogs had just 26 players on their roster, including 17 freshmen and sophomores, and came into the game 0-3 after three lopsided losses.
But Hayden coach Bill Arnold's main objective Friday was for his team to take care of business on their end, a goal the Wildcats accomplished with a solid effort in a 36-0 Homecoming romp.
The Wildcats, who improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the district, scored three touchdowns on their first five offensive plays of the night to take command and scored all of their 36 points in the first half.
"I thought our kids came out and executed good,'' Arnold said. "You go back and look at it, there's still some things we can work on and continue to get better at, but they came out and they competed right off the bat.''
Due to an agreement between the two schools a running clock was used for the final three quarters-plus after Hayden opened up a 23-0 advantage with 4:13 left in the first quarter.

Hayden set the tone for the night when TL Thompson picked up 28 yards on the Wildcats first offensive play of the night and Jack Chisham followed that play with a 25-yard TD run. Quarterback Gavin Arnold ran the ball in for a two-point conversion and Hayden was off to the races just 36 seconds into the game.
A botched Baldwin punt snap set up the Wildcats at the Bulldog 28 for their next drive and Arnold immediately connected with Kaelin Rice for a 28-yard TD. Jensen Schrickel's extra point put Hayden in front 15-0 at the 5:56 mark of the opening quarter.
A Nolan Becker pass interception put Hayden back in business and Chisham scored his second touchdown of the night on a 13-yard run. Arnold's two-point conversion run made the score 23-0 at the 4:13 mark, putting the running clock in effect.
Thompson added a 13-yard score early in the second quarter (run failed) before junior Jameson Kennedy scored the Wildcats final TD on a 1-yard plunge with about two minutes left in the half (Schrickel kick).
Baldwin reached Hayden territory twice in the second half, but the Wildcat reserves stopped the Bulldogs to close out the shutout.
"I think what I liked more than anything tonight was that the older guys were right there at the end and they were supporting their teammates,'' Bill Arnold said.
Hayden will continue district play next Friday, traveling to Osawatomie.
