Washburn University's softball team didn't have to wait long to wipe away the sour taste left by Saturday's doubleheader loss to nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma.
Returning to action 24 hours later, the Ichabods bounced back to take a 5-4, 11-1 MIAA twinbill sweep over Newman Sunday at Gahnstrom Field, improving to 21-6 overall and 7-3 in the conference.
The Ichabods got complete-game pitching performances from Raegen Hamm and Jaycee Ginter while Marrit Mead had a huge day at the plate to spearhead Washburn's 19-hit, nine extra-base hit attack.
"We challenged our kids yesterday to bounce back and play the way we can play,'' said Washburn coach Brenda Holaday said, whose team had returned to action Saturday for the first time in three weeks due to COVID-19 protocols. "There's still a lot of room for improvement, but I thought we took a step today.''

Musings at the mid-month:
-- Psst. Don’t look at the calendar and do the math. I already know this is a bit tardy.
-- It’s almost as if I took my mask off and became reacquainted with life again.
-- Then again, the mask never covered my eyes.
-- Love to chat about the Royals but my television provider, like many, does not provide access.
-- I do subscribe to the MLB Network.
-- Seems like that annual plunkage of dollars should be enough to lift a local blackout.
-- Or, that Fox Sports could allow for its regional channels to be accessed for a nominal fee.
-- Mildly frustrated anymore. Sadly, I’m used to living with radio coverage of the Royals while tuning in irregularly.
-- Baseball is the one sport that really takes you back to your youth … when I listened to games on the radio with my dad.
-- Cardinals games, mind you. Can’t remember if a Wichita station even aired the Kansas City A’s.
-- So guess what, KC? My loyalty can be a bit fleeting.
-- Still, it would be nice to watch our local team.

Washburn University's return to the softball diamond for the first time in three weeks didn't go as the Ichabods hoped, with WU dropping a 4-3, 10-1 MIAA twinbill to No. 16-ranked Central Oklahoma Saturday at Gahnstrom Field.
But the Ichabods will have plenty of opportunities to get back on track, beginning with Sunday's 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Newman.
"I thought we would struggle a little bit at the plate because we haven't seen live pitching in three weeks and have had very little opportunity to practice, and not together,'' Washburn coach Brenda Holaday said. "You're going against really good pitchers and it takes awhile to figure that out.
"I was pretty proud of our first game. I thought we played hard and well. The second game, I felt like when we left runners on early in the game and didn't score that (WU's players) got pretty defeated. They played defeated.''
Washburn, 19-6 overall and 5-3 in the MIAA, had not played the previous two weekends due to COVID-19 protocols and the rustiness showed at times Saturday.
But now the Ichabods go from not playing at all to playing a bunch, facing a grind of 20 games over the next two weeks.
