Comebacks were the theme of the day in Saturday's Washburn University-Emporia State MIAA baseball twinbill at Falley Field, with both the Ichabods and Hornets rallying for victories.
After letting a 10-1 lead get away in a 13-10 first-game loss, the Ichabods rebounded from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 victory over Emporia State in the series finale and win the series two games to one.

The Hornets (11-16 overall, 7-14 in the MIAA) scored eight runs in the top of the ninth to take the first game, but Washburn (10-17, 9-12) turned the tables in Game 2, with Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli driving in the tying run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and plating the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth with a run-scoring single.
Washburn was in control for most of the opener, tying the game at 1-1 with a first-inning home run from Eric Hinostroza and then scoring three times in the bottom of the second on run-scoring doubles from Clark-Chiapparelli, Shawnee Heights product Cole Emerson and Xavier De Leon.
The Ichabods tacked on six runs on six hits in the fourth to take a 10-1 advantage, getting a two-run home run from Peter Shearer, a three-run homer from Parker Dunn and a run-scoring single from Kros Bay.

Emporia State got back in the game with two runs in the fifth and two in the eighth before the Hornets erupted for eight runs on five hits in the top of the ninth while also capitalizing on three Ichabod errors.
Hinostroza and Clark-Chiapparelli both had two first-game hits for the Ichabods and scored twice.
Former Rossville standout Christian Roduner went 3 for 5 with two runs scored for Emporia State.
Emporia State drew first blood in the second game with a run in the first and the Hornets went up 3-0 in the fourth and 4-0 in the fifth on a solo home run from Chanler Bloomer.

Hayden's softball team picked up its first wins of the season Friday at Emporia, with the Wildcats taking 11-0 and 8-2 wins over the Centennial League-rival Spartans.
Hayden sophomore Alyssa Droge picked up both pitching wins for the 2-4 Wildcats, including a one-hit, eight-strikeout performance in the first game.
Droge followed that with a seven-hit, five-strikeout game in the nightcap.

Hayden freshman Ava Delgado went 3 for 4 in the opener with a triple and six runs batted in while sophomore Tatum Abbey had a solo home run and junior Carly Stuke had a double and a pair of RBI.
Wildcat senior Alyssa Dinkel and junior Sandy Anguiano both had a pair of hits in the first game while Droge had a triple.
Dinkel also had two hits in the second game while Stuke had a triple and three RBI, Delgado knocked in two runs and sophomore Maylee Burris had a triple.
Hayden is scheduled to return to action Tuesday, hosting Piper in a non-league doubleheader.

City athletes swept victories in all 12 events in Thursday's Topeka High Invitational swimming and diving meet at the Capitol Federal Natatorium, with Washburn Rural and Seaman combining for 11 wins en route to one-two team finishes.
Washburn Rural won five events and finished the meet with a team score of 485 points while Seaman had six wins and finished second with 376 points. Hayden was third with 327 points.
The champion Junior Blues got a pair of individual wins from Makenna Pritchard in 50-yard freestyle (26.05 seconds) and the 500 free (5 minutes, 43.07 seconds), Ellie Armstrone in one-meter diving (195.80 points) and Mara Bare in the 100 backstroke (1:03.31) while the Rural team of Aubrey Fritsch, Jeissca Ndungu, Bare and Pritchard won the 200 medley relay in 2:03.20.
Seaman's Tauren Walz and Avery Walz combined for four individual victories, with Tauren winning the 200 freestyle (2:03.03) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.19) and Avery winning the 200 individual medley (2:16.12) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.98) while the Viking team of the Tauren Walz, Avery Walz, Gabby Grace and Samantha Shea won the 200 free relay (1:48.49) and the 400 free relay (3:57.12).

Topeka High senior catcher Zoe Caryl has spent a lot of time over the last couple of years waiting to play softball.
And with each at bat this spring, the Illinois signee is doing her best to make up for that lost time.
Continuing her torrid start to the 2021 season, Caryl went 4 of 5 Friday with three home runs, a triple and seven runs batted in as Topeka High improved to 8-0 on the year with a 6-3, 10-1 doubleheader sweep over Centennial League rival Seaman at Hummer Sports Park.
After having the '20 high school season canceled due to COVID-19, Caryl was sidelined again, this time by mononucleosis, last fall, making her even more eager to get back on the diamond.
"This fall I got sick and didn't get to play club ball and I got knocked out of cross country, I got knocked out of everything, and I've worked really hard to get back to where I was this last summer,'' Caryl said.
"I've been waiting for this. With COVID taking our season last year, I've been waiting for high school softball.''

WAMEGO -- Washburn Rural's golf team didn't have a bad day Thursday in its invitational tournament at Wamego Country Club.
It's just there were other teams that had a better one.
Jared Goehring's Junior Blues had three players in the 70s en route to a four-man score of 308, but that was only good enough for a third-place team finish in the 11-school event as Blue Valley ran away with the team title by a 294-304 margin over runner-up Blue Valley Northwest.
"We just ran up against a very competitive field,'' Goehring said. "Conditions started tough today and we didn't get off to the best of starts, but we finished. It's the way the ball bounces and we just didn't make enough putts today,
"Tip your hat to Blue Valley and Blue Valley Northwest. They put up some good scores.''
Luke Leonetti
Junior Luke Leonetti paced Washburn Rural, shooting a 74 to finish sixth individually, while juniors Giles Frederickson and Turner Depperschmidt both added 77s.
