Washburn’s women’s basketball team avenged a home loss to Newman earlier in the season, posting a 65-49 MIAA win on the Jets’ home floor to improve to 6-6 on the season.
Junior Nuria Barrientos recorded her fifth double-double of the season, finishing the night with 11 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 blocks.

Hayden got a big bounce-back win Thursday in Wellsville’s Top Gun Tournament, rolling to a 54-30 consolation win over the host Eagles behind senior Rhen Calhoon’s game-high 24 points.
Calhoon was joined in double figures by freshman Lauren Sandstrom, who had 10 points and 2 3-pointers, as the Wildcats improved to 6-5 on the season.
The Wildcats doubled up the Eagles in a 10-5 first quarter and led 26-15 at the half. Hayden then put the game away with a 21-6 third quarter, opening up a commanding 26-point lead entering the fourth.

Washburn Rural girls basketball coach Kevin Bordewick wasn't real happy with the way his team started Thursday's game against Great Bend and shared that information with his Junior Blues during an early time out.
The Junior Blues got the message, outscoring the Panthers 58-25 over the final three quarters to take a 75-37 victory at Rural and improve to 9-1 on the season.
Washburn Rural, ranked No. 4 in Class 6A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, never trailed in the game, but the 4-6 Panthers were still within a point late in the opening quarter.
"(Great Bend) coach (Cindy) Beck did a lot more with her kids than what we were doing with ours,'' Bordewick said of the opening minutes. "I thought defensively we just came out slow. We were standing up, we weren't in a stance, we weren't ready, we weren't talking, things that I thought we were getting better at that we weren't doing.
"That's why we were a little upset in the first quarter.''
Washburn Rural sophomore Brooklyn DeLeye scored 26 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in Thursday's 75-37 win over Great Bend.

Hayden senior Isabella Valdivia captured the individual title to lead the Wildcats to the girls team championship in Wednesday's Hayden bowling triangular at Gage Bowl.
Valdivia bowled a 506 three-game series to claim individual honors while Hayden earned the team title by a 1,720-1,508 margin over Ottawa. Highland Park was third with a 1,462 team score.
Hayden also got third and fourth-place from senior Grace Moran (416) and junior Kayla Simons (409) while Highland Park’s Alaura Austin was fifth (391).

Washburn Rural was the heavy favorite going into Thursday's city swimming and diving championships and did not disappoint.
The Junior Blues cruised to their second straight title, taking a decisive win over runner-up Hayden by a margin of 402.5-292.5.
Rural and Seaman have had a longstanding rivalry in the city meet, but other than diver Patrick Biggs, the Vikings were able to compete Thursday due to COVID-related issues.
“I have a lot of good friends on the Seaman team so I was disappointed I wasn’t going to get to race them today,” Washburn Rural junior standout Dagen Clouse said. “They just got unlucky.”
