Topeka native Gary Woodland confirmed Monday on Twitter that he has tested postive for COVID-19, but expressed optimism about a quick return to the PGA Tour.
"Unfortunately, I had to withdraw from The Honda Classic after testing positive for Covid-19. I’m grateful to be feeling good and disappointed to not be in the field this week. I’m working with the TOUR in regards to safely returning to competition and hope to be back soon,'' the Shawnee Heights grad and former Washburn University basketball player said in his Twitter statement.
Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion and a member of the U.S.'s championship Presidents Cup team in '19, competed in the The Players Championship this past week, missing the cut.
Woodland helped lead Shawnee Heights to a pair of Class 5A state basketball championships and was a three-time city golf champion for the T-Birds.
He went on to play basketball as a freshman at Washburn before turning his attention to golf at Kansas.
The 36-year-old Woodland is a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, incliuding the Open championship.
