Shawnee Heights freshman KK Emmot and Topeka West junior Kamoni Ford have been selected by the Dan Key Farmers Insurance Agency as the Rising Stars of the Week.
The Dan Key Agency will recognize top Shawnee County underclassmen throughout the bulk of the 2023-2024 school year.
Here’s a brief look at the accomplishments of Emmot and Ford over the past week:

KK EMMOT, Shawnee Heights
Emmot has opened her high school girls basketball careeer with a bang, scoring 33 points in her first two games for 1-1 Shawnee Heights.
Emmot scored 24 points on Tuesday as Shawnee Heights earned its first victory of the season, a 56-42 United Kansas Conference road decision at Piper.
Emmot scored nine points last Friday in her high school debut, with the T-Birds falling to De Soto in a UKC game, 60-52.

A 6-foot-5 junior, Ford had a breakout game for Topeka West on Tuesday, scoring a game-high 17 points in the Chargers' 69-49 United Kansas Conference home boys basketball win over Seaman.
Ford hit six of nine field goal attempts, including three 3-pointers, and went two of two from the free throw line.
Ford also grabbed seven rebounds as Topeka West improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Cair Paravel Latin boys basketball team held off a late rally by Mission Valley to beat the Vikings 48-40 at Cair Paravel Thursday.
The Lions built an 18-point lead by the middle of the third period, but saw that margin evaporate quickly.

Mission Valley used a 13-2 run to get back in the contest, eventually whittling the Cair Paravel lead to just three points with a minute remaining.
“There’s a lot of momentum that happens,” Cair Paravel coach Chip Kueffer said. “There for a moment we were playing not to lose. You always want to play to win. In the first half, we took some bad shots that went in. That’s sort of fool’s gold. That catches up to you.''
The Lions were handcuffed by fouls which sent several of their players to the bench for extended stretches. The Lions committed 17 fouls in the first period alone.
“You can write it on the white board but sometimes the game gets away from you. You’ve got to control what you can control,” Kueffer said. “Fortunately, we had a lot of guys come in off the bench and make contributions early. I’m grateful for the way we handled the adversity.”
Most notably, Cair Paravel senior Rich Hembold come into the game and drilled three 3-pointers in the second period.
When it got down to crunch time, it was senior guard Simon Everhart who came through. He scored 10 of the Lions’ last 13 points, mainly by knocking down eight of nine free throws in the second half.

“Evan Will, Simon Everhart, Ty Gossard, those guys made big plays in the last three or four minutes,” Kueffer said. “We kind of made it hard on ourselves, but those guys kept their composure and finished the game for us.”

EMPORIA -- The Hayden Wildcats, most of them anyway, got a two-week late start in preparations for the 2023-2024 basketball because they were busy helping the Wildcat football team make a run to the Class 3A title game.

But while the Wildcats may not have been in midseason form they turned in a pretty good impression of that Thursday in the opening round of the Paul Terry Classic at White Auditorium, riding a 30-point third quarter and a 22-point night from Cooper Colboch to a 69-53 win over Trinity Academy in Trey Brown's debut as Hayden's head coach.
"It was good to see what we need to clean up and what things we've got and the guys we've got and different things like that,'' Brown said. "We battled through adversity in the first half and struggled offensively, but we picked it up defensively and then scored 30 points in the third, which most of it was off our defense. We learned a lot.''

EMPORIA -- Hayden's girls basketball team wasn't always as sharp offensively as coach Carvel Reynoldson would like to see Thursday against Spring Hill.
But the Wildcats were very good defensively and effective in turning that defense into offense on the way to a 48-30 win over the Broncos in the opening game of the Paul Terry Classic at White Auditorium.

"We were really balanced offensively but never got in a rhythm, especially in our half court,'' Reynoldson said. "A lot of things we got seemed to be in transition off of steals or off a rebound.
"We always talk about being relentless (on defense) and I thought today we were relentless on the ball, got a lot of deflections and early on it felt like all of our points were off of steals.''
Hayden, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, never trailed after junior Kaliya Fulton scored the final points of the opening quarter to put the 2-0 Wildcats in front, 8-6.

MATTHEWS, NC. -- No. 2 final four seed Washburn will play for a national championship for the first time in program history after a 1-0 semifinal win over No. 2 Adelphi University on Thursday afternoon.
The Ichabods will take on No. 4 seed Point Loma in the championship on Saturday at 11 a.m. Central Time.

A 56th minute goal by former Washburn Rural standout Mackinly Rohn was the difference in the semifinal match and moved Washburn into the final match of the season.
"Credit to Adelphi,'' Washburn coach Davy Phillips said. "They're a great team and made it really hard on us. They were super organized, but I'm super happy for my team the way they were able to just stick with the game plan and (pull) it out.''
The Ichabod offense pressured the goal all afternoon as they outshot the Panthers 20 to three, including 13 to two in the second half.

Washburn had seven shots in the first half, with five of them going on goal, while holding Adelphi to just one shot overall, which landed off target.
Finally, Rohn, a freshman, was able to find the back of the net after a shot by Khloe Schuckman was deflected to the left side of the field just in front of the goal.
For the game the Ichabods ended with 11 shots on goal and the Panthers managed only one.
