Washburn Rural's soccer team survived its toughest test of the 2022 season on Friday, outlasting Wichita Northwet 4-3 in double overtime in the Junior Blues' home opener at McElroy Field.
Junior Griffin Heinen scored the game-winning goals in the second overtime period as Washburn Rural improved to 3-0-0 on the season.
Senior Easton Bradstreet continued his red-hot start to the season with a pair of goals while the Junior Blues also got a goal from freshman Draden Chooncharoen.
Junior Devon Rutschmann had a pair of assists for Rural while freshman Dylan Willingham also picked up an assist.
The Junior Blues will return to action next Thursday at De Soto.
Brown powers High soccer to 3-2 win over Hayden
Sophomore Chris Brown scored two first-half goals to help Topeka High open up a 3-1 halftime advantage en route to a 3-2 win over Centennial League rival Hayden at Hummer Sports Park.
Brown got Topeka High, now 1-1, on the board with just under 25 minutes left in the first half and Aidan Morrion put the Trojans up 2-0 with 11:11 left in the half.
Hayden cut its deficit to 2-1 on a penalty kick but Brown scored his second goal of the night with just 1:09 left in the half off an assist from Thomas Schmidt to give High its 3-1 lead.
Hayden scored the only goal of the second half to account for the final score.
T-Birds earn 1-1 soccer tie with SM North
Shawnee Heights battled Shawnee Mission North to a 1-1 tie Thursday night at the Bettis Family Sports Complex.
Senior Zach Memmer scored the game's first goal off an assist from senior Jack Martin to put the T-Birds in front 1-0 but North answered with a penalty kick to knot the game at 1-all.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net through regulation and two overtime periods and the game ended with a tie, with Heights now 0-2-1 on the season.
Deeter takes medalist honors in Emporia meet
Seaman senior golf standout Lois Deeter shot a 77 to take a one-stroke individual win in Tuesday's Emporia Invitational at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
Emporia's Olivia Eckert and Avary Eckert and St. Mary's Colgan's Ali Scripsick all shot 78s.
Seaman junior Avery Samuelson finished 10th with a 91, while freshman Izzy Glotzbach finished 11th with a 92.
Seaman freshman Jaycee Zimmerman placed 14th with a 95 while Hayden junior Avery Grunert took 15th with a 96.
Emporia won the team title by a 335-350 margin over Colgan while Seaman was third at 369.
Hayden placed fifth at 389 while Shawnee Heights was sixth at 438.
Junior Karlyn Bowman placed 21st with a 103 score to lead Heights.
