A mere three inches were the difference between a banner day and a so-so one for Washburn Rural junior Zsamar Sipple in Thursday's Centennial League track and field meet at Rural.

The Junior Blues' standout jumper was a double league champion with wins in the long jump and triple jump by a combined three inches over Highland Park sophomore Tre Richardson, helping lead Rural to a second-place team finish behind Manhattan (197.25-128).

Sipple won the long jump with a personal-best of 22 feet, 4.50 inches, two inches further than Richardson (22-2.50), and then waged an even closer back and forth battle with Richardson in the triple jump, needing a career-best jump of 46-1 to edge his Highland Park rival by exactly an inch (46-0).

Sipple was quick to credit Richardson, who came back to win the 200-meter dash (22.46) later in the evening, with pushing him to his big day.

"He helped me a lot,'' Sipple said. "He's pushing me to be better and better, pushing me to run faster, run harder, jump higher and keep my mind straight.''

Now Sipple wants to parlay Thursday's performance into even bigger days to come.

"I'm happy where I'm at right now, but I always know you can improve and be better,'' Sipple said. "Regionals I know there's going to be a lot of competition there, so I really need to work on my form and work on my technique.

"Today was a very good start because the competition got me hyped up and pumped up and made me push through. I need to keep that same feeling and get even better.''

Sipple was one of four Junior Blues to capture league individual titles, with senior Joel Goering winning the pole vault at 13-0, senior Sam Shonka taking the high jump crown at 6-4 and senior Marquel Russell winning the 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 15.10 seconds.

Also picking up boys individual league titles were Topeka West junior Javion Lee in the 100 in 11.07 and Hayden sophomore Jake Muller in the 300 hurdles with a personal-best time of 40.26.

• City athletes combined to win 12 of 18 events in the girls division, led by triple gold medlist Victoria Reed of Topeka West and double individual winner Taylin Stallbaumer of Seaman.

Reed, a freshman, won the 100 dash in 12.63 seconds and the 400 in 59.63 and also ran a leg on the Chargers' winning 4x100 relay (59.63) before finishing second in the 200 dash (26.84) behind sophomore teammate Ala'Jah Brooks (26.53), who also ran a leg on the winning 4x100 team.
