 Hayden sits in fifth place after Monday's opening round of the Class 4A boys golf tournament at Quail Creek Golf Course in Winfield, earning a team berth for Tuesday's final round.

The Wildcats finished the first round with a four-man score of 339 to advance to the second round.

Sophomore Tagen Rodriguez led Hayden with a first-round 82, followed by sophomore James Kuta with an 84, senior Garrett Borjon with an 89, sophomore Nick Gorman and senior Noah Haverkamp with 90s and sophomore Colin Scott with a 98.

Bulldawgs fifth in 3A team race

Rossville earned a team berth for Tuesday's final round in the Class 3A state tournament at Dodge City's Maiah Hills, currently sitting in fifth place with a four-man score of 337.

Sophomore Jonathan Hart led the Bulldawgs with a first-round 79, followed by freshman Jack Donovan with an 80, senior Kyser Lundin with an 88, freshman Paxton Willett with a 90 and seniors Aiden Baumchen and Manuel VanderPutten with a 102.

Silver Lake junior Bryce Badsky, a two-time state medalist shot a 79 to advance to Tuesday's final round as an individual.

Rural's Glynn, Tyrell advance in 6A

Junior Hayden Glynn and senior Bryan Tyrell earned invididual berths for the final 18 holes of competition in the Class 6A state tournament at Newton's Sand Creek Station.

Washburn Rural fell short of advancing as a team to Tuesday's round but Glynn shot a 77 and Tyrell a 79 to earn two of the 18 individual spots.

Rural was in ninth place as a team at the conclusion of Monday's opening round and only the top six teams advanced.

Sophomore Tadd Armstrong shot an 81 for the Junior Blues, followed by seniors Andrew Burdett and Brady Conard with 82s and senior Tyler Baumchen with an 86. 

Alonzo, Valdivia move in in 5A

Topeka West junior Myles Alonzo and Shawnee Heights senior Alex Valdivia put themselves in position for individual Class 5A state medals with solid opening rounds Monday at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.

Alonzo shot a 71 and Valdivia a 73 as the city standouts earned individual spots for Tuesday's final 18 holes.

Alonzo was in 10th place after the first round and Valdivia tied for 14th. The top 20 finishers after Tuesday's second round will receive state medals.

Shawnee Heights earned a team berth for state with a regional team title but was 12th after the opening round and will not compete as a team on Tuesday.

T-Bird seniors Aiden Jones and Tanner Zerger shot 86s Monday while junior Jensen Crawford had an 89, senior Tyler Lincoln a 91 and junior Zackary Hohman a 93.

Seaman junior Zachary Weir, competing as an individual, shot an 82 Monday.

Cair Paravel's Helmbold, Pavlik advance in 2A event

Cair Paravel Latin narrowly missed a Class 2A team berth for Tuesday's final round at Hesston Golf Course, but Lion junior Rich Helmbold and sophomore Jase Pavlik qualified as individuals.

Helmbold shot a first-round 84 and Pavlik an 87 to move on to Tuesday.

Cair Paravel finished the opening round eighth as a team with a four-man score of 360, just two strokes out of the sixth and final team berth.

Freshman Caleb Cleverdon shot a 91, junior Simon Everhart a 98, junior Ty Gossard a 99 and freshman Luke Budden a 101.
