Highland Park's girls basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 71-39 romp past Class 6A school Free State in Thursday's opening round of the Glacier's Edge Invitational at Emporia.
After dropping a 55-47 non-league decision at Eudora on Tuesday, Rob Brown's Scots rolled to the Glacier's Edge semifinals with Thursday's 32-point win over the Firebirds.
Freshman Pearmella Carter paced the Scots with 22 points (9 of 13 from the field) and added nine rebounds and six steals.
Angelique Gowan-Britt added 18 points and also grabbed a game-high 14 points while recording three assists and three steals.
DeAsia Sanders had six assists and five steals in the win.
Highland Park, now 5-1, will face Blue Valley at 6:15 p.m. Friday in the first semifinal, followed by a matchup between host Emporia and Derby.
Hi Park boys roll past KC-Schlagle, 58-19
Highland Park's boys posted their second win of the week, taking a 58-19 Meadowlark Conference road win over Kansas City-Schlagle Thursday night.
Junior Mikey Williams paced the Scots with 17 points, including five 3-pointers, while junior Ja'Corey Robinson had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior Jamon Wilson dished out nine assists as the Scots improved to 8-1 on the season.
Hayden girls roll to Hiawatha Invitational title game
Hayden's girls, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, will play for the Hiawatha Invitational championship on Saturday after romping to a 61-34 victory over Marysville on Thursday.
Senior Lauren Sandstrom led Hayden with 15 points while junior Amelia Ramsey added 13 points and junior Norma Greco 11 points.
Now 10-1, Hayden will play for the tournament title at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against St. Joseph, Mo.-Lafayette.
Blue Valley tops Lady T-Birds
Shawnee Heights' girls dropped a 58-47 decision to Blue Valley in Thursday's first-round game of the Glacier's Edge Invitational at Emporia.
The T-Birds, now 5-5, will play a 3:15 p.m. consolation game on Friday against Free State.
