The Washburn men’s basketball team went cold late, dropping an 89-80 road MIAA decision at Missouri Southern State.

Sophomore Tyler Nelson scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for the Ichabods and senior Tyler Geiman had 21 points and 6 assists, but WU was unable to hold off the Lions.

Washburn (15-6, 15-6) led 47-44 at halftime after the game was tied nine times in the half.

The game went back and forth through the early stages of the second half before Southern took the lead for good at 77-76 with 4:31 remaining and the Lions used a 12-4 run over the final four minutes to take the win.

Back to back hoops from Geiman and Rathen Carter cut Washburn’s deficit to 83-80 with 1:14 remaining but Lawson Jenkins canned a big 3-pointer for Southern and the Lions clinched the win at the free throw line, going 17 of 25 on the night.

Cam Martin led the 13-8 Lions with 28 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists.

Junior Jalen Lewis was the third player in double figures for Washburn, finishing with 11 points.

The Ichabods close out the regular season at home, hosting Emporia State in  a 3 p.m. contest at Lee Arena.

The Hornets took a 91-74 win over WU on Jan. 23.

MISSOURI SOUTHERN WOMEN 59, WASHBURN 51

Washburn outscored Southern by a whopping 28-13 margin in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to pull the Ichabods out of a big hole they dug themselves in the first half.

Missouri Southern (8-13) jumped out to a 10-2 lead Thursday and led 16-10 at the end of the opening quarter.

Washburn (10-11) then hit an offensive wall in the second quarter, going 0 of 10 from the field and hitting just two free throws as Missouri Southern opened up a commanding 35-12 advantage, putting together a 25-4 scoring run in the final 12:58 of the opening half.

Down 56-32 with 5:22 left, Washburn came alive with a 19-3 scoring run and Adyson Narber hit WU’s third 3-pointer of the fourth to cut Southern’s final margin to single-digits.

Washburn shot 32.7 percent (18-of-55) from the field and hit 4 of 26 3-point attempts.

Freshman Lauren Cassaday was a perfect 6 for 6 from the field and tied her season-high with 15 points for Washburn while pulling down 6 rebounds.

Junior Nuria Barrientos also contributed 15 points for the Ichabods

Carley Turnbull paced the Lions with 16 points and Madi Stokes added 11.

The Ichabods will close out the regular season at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Emporia State, which took a 64-55 win over Washburn earlier in the season.
