The goal for Megan Lucas and Abby Glynn is to win every time they step on a golf course.

But although the former Washburn Rural state champions fell short of that Tuesday, they still left Topeka Country Club with their heads held high after posting top-five individual finishes in the Kansas Women's Amateur.

Lucas, a former Class 6A individual champion, a three-time medalist and two-time state team champ, finished third at 227 after shooting rounds of 77, 75 and 75 while Glynn, a three-time 6A state team champ and three-time individual medalist, tied for fifth at 229 after rounds of 75, 76 and 78.

"I definitely know I left a lot out there so it's easy to look back and think, 'Ah, I could have won, I could have shot lower,' but at the same time I can't really complain too much about just missing a couple of putts,'' Lucas said. "I still played a really solid round.''

Lucas, a Wichita State senior, finished three strokes behind Maya McVey of Blue Springs, Mo., and Emerie Schartz of Wichita, who tied for the championship at 224 before McVey won on the first playoff hole.

Megan Whitlock (Elkhorn, Neb.) finished fourth at 228 while Glynn, a senior at Kansas, and Kinslea Jones (Wichita) tied for fifth at 229.

"When you look at it from the outside, it feels good,'' Glynn said. "I'm always my biggest critic, just because it's my home course and I didn't have my best game today, but it was manageable overall.''

Glynn and Lucas got the opportunity to play in the same threesome Tuesday, which the former teammates agreed was a highlight of the day.

"It was a lot of fun,'' Lucas said. "We don't get to spend as much time together since we're at college now, so it was fun. It just felt like the old days, playing together and having fun. It was a good day.''

Glynn agreed.

"It was so fun,'' Glynn said. "We were talking about it yesterday, even before the pairings came out. We were really hoping we'd get to play together. Every summer we hope we get to do that a couple of times, so I had a blast today.''

Former Washburn Rural standout Madelyn Luttjohann finished 38th at 258 (84-86-88) while recent Rural graduate Aliyah North tied for 40th place at 259 (83-85-91) and Seaman senior Lois Deeter finished 47th at 265 (89-88-88).
