Cair Paravel Latin product Hannah Woolery scored both goals as No. 6-ranked Emporia State soccer took a 2-1 victory in the first round of the Turnpike Tussle over Washburn University, handing the Ichabods their first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon at the ESU Pitch.
Woolery got the Hornets on the board just under nine minutes into the match, scoring on a free kick from about 30 yards out that got over Ichabod keeper Raegan Wells into the left-hand side of the goal.

Alejos, a senior, rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries and also had two pass receptions for 19 yards and a TD as Topeka High's football team picked up its first victory of the season, a 28-20 Centennial League decision over Emporia last Thursday at Hummer Sports Park.

A senior running back/defensive back, Chisham rushed for 182 yards on 14 attempts and scored on runs of 2 and 69 yards in Hayden's 39-6 victory over Topeka West last Friday night at Hummer Sports Park, helping the Wildcats improve to 2-1 on the season.

Silver Lake's volleyball team didn't get off to the best of starts in Saturday's Rossville Invitational, but the rest of the day belonged to the Eagles.
Sarah Johnson's Eagles dropped a tough three-set match to Nemaha Central in their first pool play match (17-25, 25-23, 18-25), but rebounded to take pool wins over Ottawa (23-25, 25-17, 27-25), the NEK Saints (25-19, 27-25) and Abilene (25-18, 26-24).
The Eagles were pushed to their third three-set match of the day by host Rossville in the semifinals, with Silver Lake outlasting the Bulldawgs, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23 to earn a rematch with Nemaha Central in the championship match.
Silver Lake topped the Thunder in two sets, 25-22, 25-17, to cap their 5-1 day with the tourney title.

Washburn Rural junior Madeline Carter placed a city-high third among 91 girls runners in Saturday's Baldwin Invitational at the Baldwin City Golf Course, pacing a large city contingent.
Carter clocked a five-kilometer time of 18 minutes, 49.15 seconds in a race won by Mill Valley senior Katie Schwartzkopf in 18:23.31.

Three other city runners posted top-10 finishes in the girls race, with Seaman junior Bethany Druse finishing eighth (19:26.67) while Rural senior Khloi Bird (19:27.86) and freshman Payton Fink (19:28.84) placed ninth and 10th.
Seaman senior Emma Schultz (20:24.70) and Viking freshman Joslynn Grace (20:25.46) finished 28th and 29th while Seaman freshman Anna Becker was 35th (20:42.03), Topeka West senior Anna Phelps 38th (20:55.44) and Seaman freshman Stella Appelhanz 40th (21:01.66).
Washburn Rural (134) and Seaman (139) finished fifth and sixth among 11 schools in the team standings.

KEARNEY, Neb. – A balanced offensive attack paired with a dominate defensive effort powered No. 3 Washburn University volleyball past top-ranked Nebraska-Kearney in four sets on Saturday, handing the Lopers their first loss of the season and snapping their 28-match home winning streak.
The Ichabods jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-22 and 25-20 wins before the Lopers bounced back to take a 25-21 win in the third set.
Washburn then closed out the match with a convincing 25-16 win to improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA.
Washburn's last victory against a No. 1-ranked team was a 3-1 win against Nebraska-Kearney on Sept. 15, 2018 in Topeka. That same season, the Ichabods defeated the Lopers again in four sets in Kearney on Oct. 20 when UNK was ranked No. 2 in the nation.
Washburn made a statement to start the match and claimed the first four points. Nebraska-Kearney (9-1, 1-1 MIAA) quickly began to chip away at the deficit and took its first lead of the match at 8-7.

Trailing 10-8, the Ichabods called a timeout and responded with a 5-0 scoring run to re-take the lead. UNK evened the score at 18-all, but a kill from JalynStevenson started a 5-2 spurt for the Ichabods and Kelsey Gordon finished off the 25-22 set win with her seventh kill of the set.
The script flipped for the start of the second set as the Lopers jumped out to a 5-1 lead, forcing an early Washburn timeout.
