JACK BACHELOR, Washburn University
A 6-foot-2 freshman, Bachelor came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points in Saturday's 93-71 MIAA win over Rogers State at Lee Arena. Bachelor, a former star at Washburn Rural, hit six of nine field goal attempts and three of five 3-point shots and two of two free throws against Rogers State as the 5-3 Ichbods picked up their first conference victory of the season. Bachelor also contributed three assists and two blocked shots for the Ichabods.
Cooper Colboch
COOPER COLBOCH, Hayden
Colboch, a 5-foot-11 senior, scored 51 points with 11 3-pointers in three Paul Terry Classic games at Emporia's White Auditorium, helping lead the Wildcats to a 2-1 tournament record to open their 2023-2024 season. Colboch scored 22 points and hit six 3-pointers in Thursday's 69-53 win over Wichita Trinity and ended the tournament with 23 points and five 3s in Saturday's 66-47 win over Spring Hill. Colboch scored six points in Friday's 50-44 loss to tournament champion Emporia.
Rylee Dick
RYLEE DICK, Rossville
A sophomore, Dick was named the tournament's most valuable player in Chapman's Irish Classic after helping lead Rossville to three straight wins and the championship. Dick scored 23 points with three 3-pointers and a six of six performance at the free throw line in Saturday's 83-40 win over Chapman after scoring 16 points in Friday's 60-45 win over Salina Sacred Heart and 23 points with three 3s in Tuesday's 105-16 first-round victory over Kansas City-Bishop Ward.

Topeka High swept the team championships in Saturday's Melvin Douglas Invitational wrestling tournament at Highland Park, with the Trojan boys and girls combining to claim nine individual titles.
Topeka High won the boys title by a 198-167 margin over Gardner-Edgerton while the Trojan girls won by a 120-59 margin over Highland Park.

The Trojans got boys individual titles from sophomore Luis Morones (113), senior Raul Arriola (144), sophomore Rehabiah Williamson (150) and junior Detrick Johnson (190) while Jesus Morales (106), Jordan Stiner (138) and Nick Davis (165) finished second.

The High girls got individual championships from freshman Abigail Culbertson (105), senior Neveah Martin (115), junior Zoe Dawkins (120), sophomore Addison Pinto (125) and senior Zazie Haddou (130) while Ingrid Cabrera (100), Kiley Ehmpke (110), Olivia Tatum (120), Jena Bratton (135) and Abigail Lojewski (145) all posted runnerup finishes.

Other city girls individual champions included Highland Park junior Kimberly Rodriguez (100), senior Mercedes Garcia (145) and sophomore Makayla Cadet (190) and Topeka West's Ziona Jackson (135) and Dadriona Anderson (140).

The Wildcats, who are ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, improved to 4-0 on the season with Saturday's victory, their third tournament victory in as many days.

Junior Brylee Meier scored 29 points with four 3-pointers to power Hayden past Trinity.
Hayden opened the tournament with a 48-30 win over Spring Hill on Thursday before knocking off tournament host Emporia, ranked No. 6 in 5A on Friday, 50-45.
Meier scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in Friday's win over Centennial League rival Emporia while junior Kaliya Fulton added 12 points.
Hayden will play a road game Friday against Kansas City-Bishop Ward.

ROSSVILLE GIRLS 83, CHAPMAN 40
Rossville's girls wrapped up the championship in the Irish Classic with an 83-40 romp past tournament host Chapman on Saturday.
The 4-0 Bulldawgs got 25 points from freshman Nora Burdiek, 23 from sophomore Rylee Dick and 14 from senior Emma Mitchell in Saturday's win over Chapman.

The Washburn men torched visiting Rogers State with 60 percent shooting – 67 percent in the second half – to build a comfortable lead and cruise to a 93-71 win Saturday.

After a bit of a slow start, Washburn eventually built a double-digit lead and kept the Hillcats at arm’s length throughout most of the contest.
“It helps when you make shots, and we made shots today,” Washburn coach Brett Ballard said. “We did a good job of sharing it. We got some good looks, and we made some tough looks too. When you make shots, it helps everything.
“I thought we were ok defensively. Not great. But we made enough shots to keep them at that distance.”
The one snag in the first half was foul trouble encountered by sophomore point guard Sam Ungashick. Junior Jake Schadegg and freshman Jack Bachelor came off the bench to fill in for the starting point man.
“Sam is a very good player and has been very good,” Ballard said. “So, I was a little concerned when he went out. But Jake Schadegg came in and did a very good job, not just holding things down but elevating us. We actually played a little bit better with Jake in there, which says a lot about Jake as a player.
“Jack and Jake both did a very good job handling that point guard role and allowing us to finish the first half strong.”

The Washburn women had to overcome the coldest of cold starts to earn their first MIAA win Saturday, pulling it together in the second half to defeat Rogers State 56-44 at Lee Arena.

The Ichabods entered the game averaging 80.6 points per game but they sure didn’t look like it, judging by the first half Saturday.
Washburn hit just two of 17 attempts in the first period, which concluded with just six points on the scoreboard for the home team.
The second quarter didn’t get much better. The Ichabods hit just three of 13 shots, raising their point total to just 15 by halftime.
“Usually, at halftime, we come in and talk strategy,” senior Aubree Dewey said. “But today we just came in and said, ‘We just need to relax. This is not who we are. We need to just slow it down and get back to who we are. To get back to sharing the ball and getting the ball in the bucket.’ ”
Fortunately for the Ichabods, the visiting Hillcats had just about the same amount of trouble putting the ball in the basket. Washburn trailed just 9-6 after one period and 19-15 at half.
“I thought we defended well enough that we still had a chance even after a pretty miserable first half,” Washburn coach Lora Westling said. “So, we really credited our defensive effort and our game plan there.”
The Ichabods made it apparent immediately that the second half would not mirror the first. They quickly cut into the Hillcats’ lead, moving in front within the first four minutes of the third period. On the strength of 15 points from non-starters in the third period, the Ichabods zoomed into the lead and never looked back. They outscored Rogers State, whose scoring issues persisted throughout the day, 22-10 in the third period.
“They came out with their heads up after the half, got some great possessions right off the bat, and then put their foot on the gas,” Westling said. “We found some rhythm, so we quit making it so hard for ourselves.”
