Washburn’s women’s basketball team forced an overtime with a bucket in the closing seconds of regulation, but couldn’t keep pace with Pittsburg State in the extra session, with the Gorillas taking a 69-61 MIAA win at Lee Arena.

Pittsburg State outscored Washburn 11-3 in overtime to improve to 8-3 overall and in the conference with its seventh straight victory while Washburn fell to 4-5, 4-5

.Washburn led much of the game, including an 18-17 edge after the first quarter, a 36-34 advantage at the half and 50-48 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Pittsburg State opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 56-50 advantage

Washburn tied the game at 56-all with 4:24 left on a pair of Abby Oliver free throws and a layup by Hunter Bentley, but Pittsburg State reclaimed the lead with just under two minutes remaining.

With just eight seconds remaining in regulation, junior Nuria Barrientos scored to tie the game at 58 and Pittsburg State missed a shot at the buzzer to force the OT..

Washburn’s Macy Doebele scored the first points of the overtime on a layup, but that would be the only field goal the Ichabods would make while the Gorillas scored 8 straight, including back-to-back 3-pointers, to put WU away..

Washburn struggled offensively, shooting 31.6 percent from the field, while Pittsburg State shot 41.7 percent. The Ichabods hit just 3 of 16 3-point attempts.

Senior Hunter Bentley led the Ichabods with 16 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals while Oliver, a sophomore out of Wabaunsee, recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Barrientos had 11 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Tristan Gegg led three double-figure scorers for Pittsburg State with a game-high 24 points.

Washburn will play its third game in six days at 6 p.m. Tuesday, hosting Lincoln in a makeup game.
