Seaman's girls basketball team, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, continued its dominating start to the 2022-2023 season Tuesday night, rolling to a 63-35 United Kansas Conference victory at Piper.
Now 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the UKC, the Vikings got 19 points, six assists, three steals and three 3-pointers from sophomore standout Anna Becker while junior Taylin Stallbaumer contributed 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and three 3-pointers.
Junior Brooklyn Gormley was the third Seaman player to crack double figures, scoring 10 points and grabbing four rebounds.while senior Jaycee Schumann had five assists and four steals.
Seaman players were credited with 18 assists on 21 made baskets while six Vikings combined for the team's 10 3-point baskets.
Seaman will be at home Friday to host sixth-ranked De Soto in a 5:45 p.m. UKC contest.
TOPEKA HIGH GIRLS 75, MANHATTAN 42 -- Defending Centennial League champion Topeka High opened defense of its league title with a 75-42 romp at Manhattan Tuesday night.
The Trojans, ranked 10th in Class 6A by the KBCA, improved to 5-1 on the season with their fifth straight victory as senior Kiki Smith led the way with 18 points, one of four Topeka High players in double figures.
Senior Faith Shields and sophomore Jo'Mhara Benning added 14 points apiece for the Trojans while junior Ladaysha Baird scored 12 points.
Topeka High led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and steadily pulled away from there, leading 37-26 at the half and putting the game out of reach with a 19-5 third quarter.
The Trojans outscored Manhattan 19-11 in the fourth quarter, wrapping up a 38-16 scoring advantage in the second half.
Kat Ball led Manhattan (2-4 overall, 0-1 league) with 12 points, including three 3-pointers, while Avery Larson added 10 points.
Topeka High will travel to Bonner Springs on Thursday for a 6 p.m. non-league game.
TOPEKA WEST BOYS 65, LANSING 49 -- Eighth-ranked (Class 5A) Topeka West trailed 31-27 at the half before taking control with a 19-4 third quarter in a 65-49 United Kansas Conference road victory.
West (3-1 overall, 3-1 UKC) led 18-13 at the end of the opening quarter but Lansing (1-2, 1-2) outscored the Chargers 18-9 in the second quarter before West bounced back with its huge third quarter.
Senior Xavier Alexander powered Topeka West to the victory, scoring a game-high 25 points.
Junior Ryan French led Lansing with 19 points.
Topeka West, which has won three straight games, will travel to Junction City on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. matchup between the former Centennial League rivals.
MANHATTAN BOYS 56, TOPEKA HIGH 46 -- Topeka High got off to a good start at Manhattan Tuesday night, but the hosts used a 15-5 third quarter to take control in a 56-46 Centennial League contest.
The Trojans (1-3 overall, 0-1 league) led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and were locked in a 25-25 halftime deadlock before Manhattan held a 31-21 advantage over the final two quarters.
Collins Elumogo led Manhattan (5-1, 1-0) with 17 points while Jason Kim added 14 points.
Topeka High will play a 7:30 non-league game at Bonner Springs on Thursday.
LANSING GIRLS 58, TOPEKA WEST 53 (OT) -- Topeka West (0-4 overall, 0-4 UKC) came within a few seconds of notching its first win of the seaon, but Lansing (2-1, 2-1) hit a 3-pointer to force overtime and held off the Chargers in the extra session for the 58-53 overtime win at Lansing.
Junior Zoe Clark led Topeka West with 16 points while senior Jazmyn Ford added 12 points.
Sophomore Addison Callaway led Lansing with 16 points while junior Ashlynn Jaccard added 14.
Topeka West will play a 6 p.m. non-league game at Junction City on Thursday night.
PIPER BOYS 61, SEAMAN 48 -- Piper (2-1, 2-1) took control in the first half on the way to a 61-48 United Kansas Conference victory over Seaman (1-2, 1-2) at Piper.
The Pirates led 31-19 at the half and took a 45-33 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Freshman KaeVon Bonner led Seaman with 18 points.
The Vikings will be at home on Friday to host De Soto in a UKC contest.
